  1. If i decide to use RAW workflow, will i have to invest in custom Mac Pro or PC or will a high end Macbook Pro or IMac be fine
  2. For years people have been waiting for the RED scarlet, myself included, but then i realized yesterday that the EX3 at F1.9 and Fixed Scarlet at F2.6, the Sony is about the same DoF not to mention a better focal range and actually exists for purchase apart from 3k resolution and better dynamic range, is there any reason to even get the scarlet?
  3. I was wondering how to recreate the tube lights in these videos Kelly rowland -work Jeremih -Down on me From what i can tell the are florescent bulbs without the fiittings, How would i build a working light?
  4. Now before the mob burns me on the stake, let me explain, while Michael may not be the best Director in term of narrative substance, he sure knows how to give the audience what they want. Yes the are hormonal teenagers, but generally teens dont really care about characters anyway unless they are female and provocatively dressed. So may potential filmmakers deride his work and claim its easy. So why havent we seen the second coming of Michael Bay? Answer - Its hard, A few Directors may be able to come up with ideas as visually grand but may not be as good in translating it to the Big screen - G.I Joe. I watched True Grit with my fiend the other day, after beginning him to come, not to my surprise he fell asleep, and i can see why, critically its a beautifully crafted work of art, but apart from that its boring. Before you criticise him i have watched many great films with other friends and received the same reaction. We have even made short films and while mine is no where near the best narrative, i noticed something, as long as your audience finds it interesting in a positive way - nothing else matters. Its harsh but thats the reality, no matter how well crafted your film is, if the audience lose interest then its the same as them never seeing it, but if it was interesting, thing like out of focus shots, continuity errors go unnoticed and you get good word of mouth! So are "bad" films really bad? or should you say, you didnt enjoy it, or its not your type of film, because as long as the project was profitable based on its creative merits, not solely reliant on the name of it cast or director, then surely isnt it a good film, just because a critic didnt enjoy it, doesnt mean somebody else didnt, we come to films entertained. So how would you define a bad film?
  5. I thinks its more about execution, spider-man has a massive backlog of story, so i doubt they would have run out of ideas. Maybe what made the first to films so original has become overused by the third.
  6. James Bond is a franchise so i am not sure if its technically a trilogy. The Color trilogy seems to be more of spiritual sequels than direct sequels i.e the same protagonist.
  7. I was talking to someone about the anticipation of "The Dark Night Rises" and while i have faith Chris Nolan will do a good job, I cant see it being better than "The Dark Knight". Looking back at the trilogies with decent directors at the helm, the third film tend to suffer. WHile some like LOTR trilogy and Toy story are all the same quality, Most tend to go First>Second>Third or Second>First>Third. I think its because the second is expansion of the world of set up in the first, so it has more potential, while the third suffers because it brings closure to the world, which can be difficult. Do you think the third in a trilogy is generally the worst?
  8. Thanks for replying chris, there was meant to be a ring prop, unfortunately it wasn't present on the day we filmed and i couldn't afford rebooking the location. Yes there were two cameras, it was all done in two days so I had a 2 camera setup to save time. I used a 7d and 60d. The 7d faced screen right. The 7d used a 50mm 1.4 which is half a stop higher than stated, so it used a slightly slower than than the 60d which used a tamron 17-50m. I used the 50mm and 7d for all over shoulders for the blonde so i could give her the best image possible. Also both cameras had different color temperatures due to the different lenses. I am thinking or redoing the project but taking the model angle out so its more workable. Any areas you think I could improve?
  9. I just finished my first ever short film for my university course. I shot it on a Canon 7d and 60d. I would like some critique on my shot composition mainly, i am not sure if i matched eyelines well and where the framing can be improved. As for the narrative itself, it’s a little incoherent, but the premise is a young model suspects her partner is cheating on her but in reality he is actually preparing to propose to her. Thanks Ayo
  10. I'm considering investing in either a Red Scarlet or the new Sony NXCAM, that is yet to be announced. I am leaning towards the NXCAM, since it has the same sensor as the Sony F3, and i am used to the workflow, plus who knows when the scarlet will actually be ready. In the beginning i was reserved about using a2/3 inch camera but then i remembered that Slum-dog millionaire was filmed on the Si-2k and that looked beautiful, it all comes down to the person behind the camera and dynamic range. Alot of my colleague think the DOF was too deep, but i remember older films had a much deeper field but again they had slower lenses. So my question is there anything wrong creatively with a deeper depth of field in your opinion? I know larger sensors are preferred because of more photons per pixel, but this is just a purely creative decision.
  11. I havent used a Red camera personally, but was reading about the redcode raw and discovered it data rate is only around 28mb/s. I thought this was low for a camera that shoots over 3k when a 5D's h264 files have a 50mb/s data rate. I was wondering if someone could explain this to me?
  12. I am graduating with a Degree in Film and Television Production in July next year and plan to work for a year before pursuing a MAster in Directing Film at Bournemouth. I have worked as a Lighting/Camera operator on student films and my initial idea was to work as an event videographer next year, while continuing my degree. I was wondering if there are any other options for work after i graduate, my specialization is camera and lighting.
  13. I have just finished my final draft for my Final Year short film and i am currently in the process of location scouting and auditions. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can find a location for an office scene, cubicles would be appreciated. I am also looking for where i can rent LitePanels, i am undecided whether to use soft boxes, lite panels or ring lights and i plan to do a screen test before i head into production.
  14. Thanks for the reply, sorry i didnt mean the lite panel, i meant this kind, http://www.northerntooluk.com/lighting/240v-and-110v-worklights/230v-led-worklight_060608E.html?afc=ShoppingSite&des=GoogleShop I will try and to screen tests today and posts the results
  15. I was wondering if its possible to use L.E.D and Fluorescent Work lights as soft light. Originally i planned to use red-heads with chimeras or even a soft box but my producer says its impossible with the budget. Any suggestions are welcomed, i plan to use scrim to dim the light
  16. I found one i like, looking for it on ebay http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/149963-REG/Arri_571159_Chimera_Video_Pro_Bank.html Can i just attach it to the red head or do i need to purchase an adaptor as well?
  17. What is a chimera? From google, it looks like an adapter for soft boxes?
  18. I think my jargon is lacking, so my explanation us a bit vague, are there any sites i can use to improve it? Your right the light i have give a very lit look, apart from scrim and a light box, are there any other-ways to soften it? a friend of mne suggested lighting nets. the look I am going for is http://0.tqn.com/d/movies/1/0/n/c/N/prestigepic3.jpg I think wally uses soft high key light to make his characters stand out, do you agree?
  19. Im interested in how he creates such natural looking light on the talent. their faces look so evenly lit especially, i like the naturalistic look to it.
  20. I'm preparing to shoot my first fictional low budget short film and I like the look of wally pfister's work, particularly in The Prestige. I was wondering if i could get any tips my equipment 3 arri red heads 2 sets of Deado lights Scrim Gels

    DOF EX3

My Film is t 2 sony EX3s, we haven't been able to use them yet in the field though. i have a shot scene next week and i have to chose between an EX3 and a 7D. i want to use the EX3 because the codec is by far better in my opinion and it has XLR inputs, i was wondering though if the DOF with the EX3s stock lens wide open would be shallow enough.
  22. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can purchase an inexpensive digital light meter in the uk?
  23. I understand everyone has their own directing style, and was wondering how this affected your lens choices. I am currently a film student and while i haven't shot alot of Drama, i like the look of a long lens and the perspective it gives. most of the time i go, long for subjective and wide for objective shots. i rarely use wides unless i want to show the whole scene. what are your opinions?
