  1. Thanks for your response! Some good ideas that I will consider for the shoot. I think the two garage scenes need the most work at the moment. The intention of the night sequence was to use 'pools of light' around the workshop keeping some of the space in shadow and adding some mystery to the location, and then during the day sequence I planned to light the whole space. The problems that I had with this on the test were placing the lights so that they would not be visible during a long take and so that myself and the actor don't cast harsh shadows when moving around as well as maintaining some motivation for them so the location doesn't look blatantly lit. For the shoot I am thinking of placing lights in the garage rafters above the space, or hiding them on the floor which will hopefully give me the desired effect and allow me to be more selective over the areas that I light. Also to fix the problems with the windows I had thought about adding a layer of 'grime' to them which would hopefully make them less reflective in the night sequence and less overexposed in the day sequence. There are a few test shots where I tried this out in the video. I agree with you about the library room, it looked too dark and also I felt the lighting looked quite unnatural so I have totally re-thought this setup. Thanks again!
  2. Hi, I am currently working on a student short film scheduled to begin shooting next week. I am the cinematographer for the project and will be operating the camera and rigging lights etc. myself. Stylistically and thematically the film will be in the vein of 'The Squid and the Whale' and 'The Savages'. We have been through a lot of testing already, here is a link to a rough edit showing some of the practice set ups we shot: http://vimeo.com/16640713 (excuse the fooling around from some of the stand-ins) I would really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions that anyone on this forum might have based on these shots, particularly in regards to the lighting as this is the area in which I feel I need to make the most progress. Thanks, Alex
