Despite all the arguments, i still don't see the point of going to a film school. can you people be so naive to think that you can come out of a film school and start making films like Tarkovsky? If I were to waste money, I'd do it making a film, instead of going to a film school. I mean, film school in US and UK are so expensive and the opportunity of hitting it big is so slim that you may as well choose plumbing if you care about making a living.
dear Zahi, you said you are from Lebanon. in your county do people care that much about where you went to school or if you even have a film-making degree or not? In my country people in film and tv media don't look for formal training, because practically nobody has it (admitting mine is not as developed a country as some of the others). Here, it's not about "what you know" but "who you know", to be honest.
In my country, you can make a short in digital for under USD 2K, but the difficult part is to get it to the people who matter. and that is all about your connections, not talent. Will going to a UK film school win you connections in Lebanon? I don't know. My point is, when making a short is much cheaper than going to school, why not learn it by doing it?
You are most welcome to disagree with me (or hack me with a chainsaw, the kind of thing Phil tend to do.)
