  2. Can someone please give me a few examples of any scenes in any film shot EXT with full sunlight with tungsten film and NO 85 filter? Also, INT shots with tungsten ligthing with full CTB, using tungsten film Thank you..

Mr. Nash, thanks for pointing out that there are other sources of lighting other than the spot overhead (must be because it says 2nd AC on my profile) :D Mr. Mullen, I will try and get myself to a few hardware stores today and check out some bulbs.. Any idea what the color temp of a halogen is compared to a Tungsten zip? Well, I guess I have a lot of play with this.. I had a post here earlier about me shooting with 250D for INT night shots.. I am happy to say, they are getting me some 320T!!! YIPPEE!! Now if they would just get me a grip/elec truck.. :lol: - - Justin
  5. It seems like all the lights on "WEST WING" are coming from overhead? I'm guessing they do that because of all the stedicam shots.. They seem to be small spots of some sort.. I'm guessing they are a little more powerful than the dedo lights? But do you think there is any way I can accomplish this lighting with some 1k's and zips? (all I have on this shoot) Place a piece of foam core above with some holes cut out and put the light above? Will that spread the light to thin? Pretty ugly, but would it work? Is smoke a good way to spread light in an area? or does it have little effect or the opposite effect? Thanks guys.. - - Justin
  6. Your DP should answer the question about the camera.. It seems you know more about he CP-16R, so go with what you know. It's a good handheld camera. It's no ARRI 235, but for it's age, and your choices, it's probably your best bet. Loading the mags for the camera are not hard if you take your time to learn what you are doing.. Threading the camera is the same, if you take your time and know what you are doing you will be fine.. If you have never done it before, see if you can get a dummy roll of film (a small roll of exposed or old film) and practice threading the camera and the magizine with that.. If you cant do that, you should quit while you are ahead and hire someone who can.. Tungsten Filmstock: Make sure if you are shooting outside and in bright daylight that you have an 85 filter and a set of ND FILTERS (. 3,. 6,. 9., 1.2). You can also get 85ND filters if you don't have the space in your matte box for more than a few filters.. Get yourself a POLARIZER too.. FILM ROLL SIZE: Yes you can keep unexposed film in the magizine overnight. Exposed film should be canned out at rap. (IN your darkroom or TENT) You can also take the unexposed film out of the magazine and put it in a spare can/bag (make sure you do this in your darkroom or tent) and save it for months and even a year or so..   7. Ask the actor to CLOSE his/her eyes and look at the sun (EYES CLOSED) then open while NOT looking at the sun.. Works well for shorter shots, not sure about a 5 min video... I live in SOUTH FLORIDA, and we have that problem on the beach frequently.. The other thing we do that someone mentioned already, is to black out, or make the area in the talents eyeline darker.. Or just tell them if they squint it will look like crap and they will never be a successful group!! Go luck.. Hope it all works out for you..

  9. Thank you all for your advice.. I have what I have, and have to make do with that.. There is no getting another camera.. I know there editing on an AVID.. --My question that remained unanswered is: If I shoot at 24fps can I slow it down in post without it looking choppy?? We are shooting standard 7246(250D) 16mm with a CP-16.. Thats what we have.. --Should I just scratch the slow motion?? I mean come on, there must be an old school way. Like what would happen if I shot at 12FPS, sped up the action, transfered at 24?Would that work? Or would I be back at square one? Thanks again for your time.. - - Justin
  10. Shooting a football scene in a nice open field (16mm) What we want is your Joe Blow "hero of the moment" running for the touchdown in dramatic slow motion.. Itttttttssssssss Goooooooooood! BAM! back to normal speed.. We have a film budget that will kill us if we have to shoot at anything over 24fps. we're using a CP-16 (didn't the dinosaurs invent that?) --Can we get away with shooting it at 24 and slowing it down in post? --Will it look choppy? --Is 16mm more forgiving or less than 35mm trying this? --We cant, BUT If it will look like CRAPOLA, would speeding it up to around 38 do the trick?   11. Thank you very much for all of your input! I think I will just try and convince the director that he will be sacrificing quality/time for the blue that he wants and to just try and make it work with the warmer orange.. Here's your lemonade. :P
  12. Great STUFF!! Question for ya.. You said: I chose to shoot the day interior on 7205 Vision2 250D to keep grain to a minimum yet maintain some speed. I rated the 7205 at ISO 160. I shot the exteriors on 7212 Vision2 100T rated at ISO 50 with an 85 plus 1/3rd overexposure. Newbie here.. how and why to you take a 250 stock and rate it at 160? same with the 100T to a 50? Sorry for the stupid question.. - - Justin
  13. First of all.. Northfork! Amazing.. I'm a bit embarrassed to have my question answered by you.. An honor non the less.. If you don't mind, which stocks did you use? You're right about the wrong tools for the job.. Pretty much the reason I was trying here. The story of my life.. Sell the film.. I wish! This is one of these deals that everything is given to us free and the time constraints wont allow for a trade.. *What will it look like if I just shoot it with the tungsten lights and the 250D. Ive never worked on a job where that has been the case.. Will it be warm? blown out orange? Do you think the tungsten lights will give me enough to at least create the look I want without the blue? I'll have to sacrifice the blue and try see if we can do something in post. I would love to get a nice high speed tungsten film and a set of ND's for my INT/EXT.. Oh well..   14. First of all, thank you for reading this.. I have recenetly been elected to DP a short film for a buddy of mine. Boy do I wish I paid attention all these years as I was 2nd ACing and Loading!!!! Here's my deal.. We're getting only one stock--7246 (250D) and we have INT and exteriors to shoot. We're getting a cheap lighting package with no HMI's. We have an INT. NIGHT kitchen scene at the small dinner table with 4 talent to shoot first thing in the morning.. The lights we will have access to are tungsten zips and fresnels. I want a cooler blue look. Dark backgrounds, subtle highlights in the BG as well. I'd like the actors faces to be brightly lit, some shadowing would be nice too.. I'd love to place some white showcard on the table and bang a light down on it for Close Ups? The TV show West Wing is a good example of what I am aiming for, but on the cool side.. Now to my questions.. Tungsten light, 250 daylight film.. 1- How can I get this look I want with these ill powered lights? 2- What type of GEL or Filter would cut it? If thats the answer? I dont think I can afford 80a and it's 2 stops with this crappy light package? 3- To get the pronounced light on the face for the wide shot for all 4 talent, how can I do this without lighting the whole room? white table cloth? White Placemats? I really just want the actors face to stand out more than anything else.. 4- Lets say the director changes his mind and says he wants a very WARM orange skin look, which I can see him doing in a heartbeat.. 5- Will it be TOO warm if I dont do anything to the lights? What will it look like? To orange? or will it just be very warm? Next we have an outdoor football scene.. fun fun... How can I match this blue look he wants.. (HE BETTER) Thank you very much for your help! Sorry if this was asked a million times.. but I did search and didn't see anything that really matched my questions.. - - Justin
