Lack of quality coverage? Maybe that meant "what" you were covering wasn't quality, meaning the actor's performances. But, since sh#t rolls downhill, you were the one criticized. My other guess would be 1. pick the craziest, most reactionary cast member and keep them in the frame and 2. get closer to your subject, catch those expressions.
