Hi all,
New here. I am currently looking into possible grad programs in Film Production (Directing) and could use some commentary or suggestions.
Background: I live in Vancouver, Canada. I received my BA in Film Production from UBC a few years ago. Since then, I spent about a year directing a large instructional contract, and a good while developing a TV project that hasn't gone anywhere yet. Over the years, I've had some light festival success with shorts. My passion and interest is in narrative writing/directing.
I'm 27 and even though I'm getting a bit old (that is to say, with ever-increasing practical pressures), I figure now if ever is the time to invest in and develop the deeper aspects of my potential. My original plan was to study Political Theory as a way of paying serious attention to the themes I'm interested in, however, I didn't get into the program that I was planning on and that suited me. Now I am looking at a more direct approach - a grad program in Film Production itself.
I am looking for a program with more emphasis on film-as-artform than the Hollywood model, which excludes for me the CFC, AFI, among many others (not that I could afford the AFI anyway, or most of the other big American ones...)
So far the standouts to me are the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia in Montreal, and the Polish National Film and Television School in Lodz.
If anyone has any comments on those programs, suggestions as to other programs to look at, or comments in general, I would very much appreciate them.
