  2. Hey guys,

I am really eager to shoot a short using super 16mm film. but I am nervous because of many reasons.

    1) where am I going to get the right camera rental, film stock, and where is it going to be possessed, also how much will all this cost?

    2) I am nervous about the over all image. With digital, when you look through the viewfinder, that's how your image will turn out for the most part. But with film what you see is not what you get. How do you know what your image will look like?

    3) How do you know your getting the shot you want?

Any answer or input is much appreciated!

    thank you.

  3. Hey guys im having trouble making up my mind on a decision I have to make.

and I thought why not get the opinions of fellow cinematographers.

to cut it short which would you rather choose

    A) 5d Mark II with 24-70Lseries lense: $3,200-$3,500

    B ) 5d mark III with 24-70Lseries lense: 5,000

my obvious conflict is the money, is it really worth it?

    thanks guys:)

  4. I'm pretty sure someone will say this, if it's a matter of pay, it's not worth getting into. Cause at the very bottom it's extremely little and you can often find yourself working for nothing at all. Most jobs in the camera department on big movies can pay a lot more than a low-budget cinematographer. With saying that, the pay is constantly volatile, it will completely vary based on how experienced you are. It can go from virtually nothing at all, to a hell of a lot on both commercials and feature films.

Of course it can be good paying, if you weigh up the career of someone who has done a lot of highly esteemed work, or big blockbusters or has an Oscar under their belt, they would be living themselves a pretty comfortable lifestyle with many offers to keep themselves in work. But getting to that level is completely based on all sorts of variables, like chance, networking and genuine talent. And it's almost a given that most of those people weren't making good money straight into it.

To get into this business and say this will be your career and all of those things will fire off for you and you will be paid this much is a huge risk. It most definitely isn't something as straightforward as getting a degree in a typical job and landing yourself in an office somewhere, which isn't even a definite thing anymore in this economy.

So in saying that, it isn't worth getting fixated on wages and fees, rather than just trying your best and knowing that you're doing what you love. It is more than likely to not play out the way most intend, even for those that possess genuine talent.

well, that about sums it up.

    well done response.

  7. Hey guys, thanks so much on all the responses and feedback on this topic!

does anyone know where I could find a basic 16mm camera I can practice with?

also where I would purchase the flm stock for it?

  8. thanks guys!

    Adrian,

you stated It's the "knowing how to shoot film and expose it" which is generally a lot more nebulous and difficult.

Thats what my main concern is, is there anyway I can learn proper methods for film by a book/ video tutorial or anything that can help me out?

  9. I shoot stills all the time, i have a canon A-1 that I use. but i feel like the prosses of loading the camera making sure everything is alright/ working with the cameras setup all is allot harder and different.

  10. Film is much more forging than digital. You want to err on the side of OVER exposure as opposed to UNDER exposure as it's more range on the highlight side of things.

Im a bit confused on the first statement, could you possibly clarify please?

thanks for the rest of the information!!!

    very helpful:)

  11. Hey guys I am an aspiring cinematographer who has gotten the chance to shoot a short film over the summer with a group of aspiring filmmakers. We are scrapping a budget together, but we are going to possibly shooting with an Arri 416 supper 16mm film camera. I have never shot a motion picture with film, just stills. is it impossible to shoot with this camera? what I mean is is it extremely complex and difficult to where only experienced men and women can achieve an exposure with a super 16mm film camera?

Any advise, tips, or experience story's would be wonderful!!

    thanks much guys,

    Mo Samra

  12. Andrew, thank you so much on that in depth response. i really appreciate it! The acceptance rate is very low for AFI if im not mistaken? I'm just extremely passionate about cinematography, and i want a school that can help me get to where i want, which is shooting films and have a steady career/ income.

  13. Hey guys, since there is allot of posts from AFI cinematography alumni, can i ask you guys a couple things?

my dream is to go to AFI for cinematography. how was your expereiences there? is it worth 60grand a year? and does that school help you start your career after you graduate?

thanks, im sorry im off topic im just very interested.

  14. Well, I guess those will be the very last ones to "surrender", and hopefully by the time it happens, digital cameras will be better than what they are now.

That doesn't mean film going away is a good thing, at all. I'm with Richard on this (as are many others), and I'd really love if film stuck around and kept being one of many choices we have at our disposal. If it goes, well, I believe we'll lose something truly beautiful and invaluable, but we live in a world where the commodity of immediacy paired with a need to push an economy of obsolescence can't be stopped, no matter what you have to give up. A lot of people, even in the love-digital/death-to-film "camp" will realize what we're going to lose when it will be unfortunately too late to do anything about it.

    well said

  15. reading this i am getting allot of mixed information, some are saying film is going to be obsolete soon, and some are saying its just slowing down. will film be obsolete in the next 5 years?

in the next decade will features still be shot on film? i hate seeing the origin and soul of movie making go down hill and disappear.

  16. I have both arms covered in 3/4 sleeves and have never once had an issue from a producer, director, client or anyone for that matter... usually just compliments on the artwork. Keep your tattoos tasteful and I'm sure you'll be fine.

but what position are you hired as?

I want to shoot feature films one day. not just be a grip or 1AC forever.

    thanks for the advise!
