  1. Head over to jwsoundgroup.net for an answer.
  2. iOS v2.0 of Sound Report Writer is now out. Features added include custom file naming options and storing character names
  3. It's not quite all about microphone placement. Correct gain structure and setting levels to camera (if single system) is as important, if not more important. Granted they're all important, but you can't just have correct mic placement and think you're in good shape.
  4. I agree with the quality. It's superb. I'd say it sounds like it was recorded on-location. Particularly the bathroom scene. Unless they went out of their way in post, but it was all tight shots, so it would have been easy to get in there real tight with a Schoeps.
  5. iOS update v1.3 is now out. Includes fixes to the PDF formatting and allows you to select/deselect any an all fields for use.
  6. Just wanted to keep everyone here updated on our releases. Version 1.2 for iOS was released last Sunday, which lets you create a new day of an existing project without entering all the project specs in again. You can also arm/disarm tracks, as well as rearrange them. The Android version was also released today, so Sound Report Writer is now available on nearly every major mobile device out there. iOS version 1.3 was submitted on Monday, which fixes any PDF formatting and allows you to make any unused columns (filename, timecode, etc.) disappear! There are also a few other minor bug fixes as well. Next up is being able to store track names and capture the Start TC and End TC. Thanks to everyone for all the feedback and patience. If you're happy with the app, please consider leaving a rating and/or review in the app store.
  7. Though probably irrelevant now, seeing how this thread is 6 months old, I'll still respond for archival purposes. I would recommend just getting a green sound guy that has some of this equipement. If he/she is willing to work for mostly experience, then you solve your budget issue. You're gambling on the quality, but I think it's a safe bet assuming you yourself, or a friend, would be operating everything that you buy/rent otherwise. To answer your question directly, there are only a few musts for sync sound (double system aka when you don't record straight to camera)... 1) recorder: look for at least 16bit and 48KHz in the specs and the ability to record .WAV files, as well as XLR inputs, and phantom power. NO .MP3 reocrders! 2) microphone: tons of reviews out there, but you'll probably want an all-purpose short-shotgun for the most balanced approach. Not going to be the best selection for every situation, but it'll do the job. The 416 you mentioned is pretty popular, but there are several other [higher end] options. My favorite dialog mic is a Schoeps CMC-MK41. 3) cables: to get the mic to the recorder, probably just one XLR RECOMMENDED: 4) operator: someone who has used the setup you use on set before you actually start shooting with success 5) mixer: a decent field mixer will have much better preamps and limiters than a basic recorder, and you'll have much more control of the levels...tons of options out there, but what does your shoot require (number of people talking in one scene, for example)?
  8. Update v1.1 is available. There were a couple minor bug fixes and a few feature additions. Supports 16 tracks, can circle from the take list, and makes timecode optional. Next update should be approved in a little over a week with more major updates. Jamming timecode, capturing start and end, timecode, arming/disarming tracks, moving tracks, loading previous project data, track name storage and more are being worked on.
  9. Just wanted to let everyone know about an app that I've been working on. Sound Report Writer gives you the ability to quickly and easily create, edit, and distribute comprehensive PDF sound reports. Keeping track of all your takes and audio track assignments has never been easier. I honestly think it's just as effective as a shot log for camera as well. Efficiency was kept in the forefront of this development, and I hope everyone can find a use for it. It's available directly in the app store here, and will be coming to the Android Marketplace soon (within the week or so). You can see a video demo and screenshots on my site at www.inaudiblelabs.com/products.html. Please send me any feature requests and report any bugs. And if you are satisfied, please leave some ratings or reviews in the app store. Thanks!!
  10. I'm a sound mixer in Dallas and have some extra tapes that a producer gave me that he didn't want to take back to LA. I have it up on eBay here. It's a box of 10 brand new tapes.
