  1. I will be Shooting a commercial for wakeboard company, I am told they have secured a helicopter for some arial shots. I'm assuming there will be a ton of camera vibration from the helicopter. Does anyone know if there is any place in Chicago that rents a gyro stabilized head? Or have any experience with this, if I was to go the cheap route does anyone know any rigging tips that would help stabilize the camera a bit? Thanks for reading!

  2. Thanks for all your input guys, I really appreciate it! Jon i definitely agree with you about developing my eye I always subconsciously had that thought in the back of my head. It was really refreshing to get some honest opinions, and not have a bunch of people blow smoke up my ass. Guess I have to just shoot, shoot, shoot and work on that!

  3. Updated my reel recently and I would really like to know what others think of it. I can never really judge my own work, I always see all the little imperfections, so it would be nice to see someone with fresh eyes opinion of it. Are the shots solid enough? composition, lighting, color correction, etc? I've approached a couple local production companies as well as some bigger ones (never expected to hear anything from them, but why not swing for the fence) about working with them, but to my dismay I haven't heard a peep out of any of them. Am I missing something in my reel? Am I not up to that level yet? I didn't expect to be hired right off the bat and be shooting the next apple commercial or anything, but some sort of acknowledgment of my existence would be nice. Even a nice "hey, got your reel now go f#!k yourself" would be acceptable at this point. Thank you to who ever takes the time to reply!

  4. I'd like to get some feed back on a band promo I recently shot. The promos were on a 5Dmk2 with a 17-40L, 28mm f1.8, and 85mm f1.8. The lighting was pretty simple just top lit with a china ball and a bunch of black wrap. I wish I could have created a bit more contrast and kept a little more detail in the blacks, but other then that I'm fairly happy with it. Let me know what you guys think and what I could work on for next time.

  5. Really cool promo video. I agree with having some more contrast and detail with the blacks. I liked the scratches you used that had that grindhouse feel to it. One of the only things I didn't like were how saturated some of the shots looked from what you did in post. Some things looked too blown out or overexposed with the edit you made. I liked what looked like lens flares though. This was very professional looking. Great job!

Thanks for input Ryan! I only shot the video, another person did all the FX work and post. Now that you mention it i agree with the over saturation and exposure (i think the contrast curve might have been pushed a little more than I would have liked)

  7. I've been playing with time lapse for a couple months now, I'd imagine more then likely your camera would be fine, but don't hold me to it. I wouldn't recommend doing it on a regular basis though because it is potentially damaging. If you are shooting the sun to get a clean exposure with out causing a whole lot of flicker, you still want to keep your exposure below 1/60th and go REALLY heavy on the ND. Also check out the forums at timescapes.org those guys might be more helpful Let us know how it goes, best of luck!

  8. I read on IMdb that Janusz resigned his ASC status, is this right ???

I know ASC is the top honor for DP's, so I'm just wondering why, does anyone know ??

I'm sure this has been asked numerous times before. From what I understand he felt snubbed by the ASC so he resigned.

  9. Thank you Archie! The POV was done hand held with a 60D and a 17-40mm lens, just awkwardly trying to hold the camera as close to the actresses head as possible, trying to shoot from her line of sight. I agree I felt that the shots of people talking felt a bit awkward at the beginning. I really wanted to just not have any shots of people talking but I didn't have much footage to work with that I felt really proud of, at least IMO. Ill try and cut it a bit faster with v2.0. i'm starting to get more footage rolling in so hopefully there will be a bit more content and a closer to a minute long. What do you recommend for showcasing dolly shots and camera movements since its kinda hard to cut those down on time?

  10. Hello all, my name is Cameron Busby. I'm first year film student. I've recently made my first cinematographer reel. I've only recently starting DPing. All content showed was shot in the last five months. My reel consists of two short films, one music video, a cooking show, Ocuppy Wallstreet stock footage, and a promotional boxing documentary. I still trying to find myself as a cinematographer and have very much to learn as a student, and would kindly appreciate some guided advice about my reel(editing, shots, color correction, lighting, movement, etc). Please don't hold back any thoughts. Thanks

Theres some good stuff in there Cameron, I feel it's a bit on the long side for only having a few project. From my understanding your if a potential client watches a solid minute of a reel its a major accomplishment,so I'd aim to cut it down to a minute maybe minute and a half. The narrative stuff looked good to me it's sharp and nicely composed, try and work a bit more on creating stronger visuals for the documentary type of footage. Anyways that's just my two cents, cheers!

P.S. I also have a reel on here that trying to get some feed back on feel free to take a look and let me know what you think.

  11. I posted this in the reels/resumes section and didn't get any responses, So I figured I give this a try. I just graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a B.A if film production, with in the last year I've shifted my main interests towards the cinematography aspect of filmmaking. Recently I cut together my first reel and I am looking for some constructive criticism from you guys. All the footage comes from a mixture of DSLR's really wish I could find an opportunity to shoot more film. I kept the reel on the shorter side I figured since I didn't have a whole lot of projects to pick from that it would be better to keep things short and sweet. let me know everything on your mind whether its amazing or if I should just stick to running the craft services table. Thanks in advance!
