  1. You know I'm going to make a controversial statement, well I don't know how controversial it is really, but I don't like Kubrick. I mean his films are bombastic and overwhelming, but after the initial wonder I always forget them. I've probably given them 5/5 but in hindsight I just remember a cold spectacle. I generally don't like "show-offy" cinema, and I think Kubrick is the prime example of trying to show-off rather than tell a visual story. It's like he's trying to make the "best" film in every genre, you know, Sci-fi with 2001, horror with The Shining, comedy with Dr Strangelove etc.

I'd just thought I would share this because it's been bugging me for some time...

I understand where you're coming from. I read somewhere that Kubrick often tried to use the camera to form a separation between the audience and the characters on screen. His work is truly distinct and I guess it's just not for everyone. I think the aspects that you hate about Kubrick are the ones that I love :) My list is:

    Movies:

    Withnail and I

    A Clockwork Orange

    Y Tu Mama Tambien

    Director:

    Stanley Kubrick

    Terrence Malik

    Wong Kar Wai

    Cinematographers:

    Emmanuel Lubezki

    Christopher Doyle

    Jack Cardiff

  2. I'm shooting Day for Night for a short film soon too. From what I can gather the important things are:

    1. Avoid framing in any sky

    2. Shoot on an overcast day or at twilight to avoid contrasted shadows.

    3. Backlight actors and do not key light them to strongly.

    4. avoid fill light by using floppies as neg fill etc.

I'm new to this too so any other advice would be appreciated.

  3. Just wondering if any experienced DPs could explain step by step the way they test lenses in pre-production? I know it can vary a lot depending on what the production is but i'd like to learn a detailed process of how a professional would undertake lens testing.
