I worked as a set electrician on Jason Reitmann's latest feature film this summer and we relied on 4 Dracast 1x1 panels with the battery mount for quick, portable use.they became the surprise workhouse instrument of the show, creating enough output that we would often bounce or double diffuse them. They are a tad clunky in design but if properly cared for can be a very reliable tool. we experimented with all types of diffuse materials and grids in the hopes of softening the punchy output. it can be done on the cheap. All in all I'll vouch for their viability.
