  1. It seems harder and harder to get jobs that pay what they did in the 80s & 90s. With advancements in digital media exploding and more and more graduates working for less

than what it cost to rent the gear they bought with their student loans, some of us are now having to reduce our rates to where we cant afford to feed our families. Please don't get me wrong on this . After I finished school I too was very eager to work, but I started right away with IA 873 in Toronto as a grip and worked my way up to DP. I guess what I'm trying to say here is I , like many of my peers, have had to take on a 2'nd job outside of our profession to make ends meet. This takes a great toll on our psyche, in some, great depression. Trying to avoid this situation I ask this. Where can a DP find representation?

  2. Can anyone tell me how well the HVX200 & sony EX1 match up look wise ? I've got to shoot something with both cameras and im a little concerned about them matching.

  3. I work out of Baltimore/DC, and while it has been getting busier the past few years and does work, it is very hard to get in as an outsider. It is a very tight-knit community, and if you get in, you are set for life, but the struggle is getting in. (This, by the way, is referring to Baltimore. DC is completely dead when it comes to film.) As the old cliche goes, its not what you know, but who you know, and this area embodies that and exaggerates it. It does have its busy moments, but unless you are or know one of the maybe 10 big camera people in this area (speaking about film camera people), it will be very difficult to get in. I would probably recommend NY or LA, where there seems to be more luck in being successful.

*Hey Tim, how you been? Finally we cross paths on the boards here!

even as a member of IA for 19 years ,after my transfer to 487 I had a great summer eraser, first kid and shadow conspieracy. then it seem to dry up. ive been in WPB FL for 8 years now and with 477, 500 & 600. Since leaving Toronto in 89 Ive never been busyier. BUT for just starting out chicago is a great place to start that is often over looked

    good luck and be hungry

    Ps Tims right

  4. Well, Shaw. The first thing I can say off the bat is that these are both great cameras. The second thing I will say is stay away from the 3-way camera shootout at DVXuser as it is indeed biased. It's a great sight with a great bunch of guys but they are without question DVX-centric (hence the site name I guess)

    :)

Anyway. Pros and cons for me are:

DVX100A Pros: Lightweight. excellent film-look to the 24p. Panasonic rep who frequents the boards at DVX user.com

DVX100A Cons: Some parts on camera kind of flimsy and fragile. (addresssed with the 100b model) Annoying echo in headphone sound out. (this is not in the actual sound in the footage. The DVX produces wonderful audio). Chips are native 4:3 not 16:9 (the DVX uses an electronic "squeeze" mode to achieve 16:9).

XL2 Pros: Shoulder mounted. Very good film look (slightly less film-like than the DVX but still good)

Interchangeable lenses. (And I don't just mean the Canon video lenses. With the right adapter(s) you have an insane amount of lenses at your disposal to utilize) Very high res picture (better for post work like cc, grading, etc). Chips are native 16:9 widescreen.

XL2 Cons: Heavy. Front heavy (but balances nicely with the CH-910 dual battery pack). Learning curve a bit steeper than the DVX. (but once you master it it is absolutely wonderful). Infinity rings for focus and zoom. (problem for some, not for all).

I own and XL2 and will keep it until it dies I like it so much. On the other hand I will be buying the HVX200 sometime this next summer because I believe Panasonic puts out a great product for the money.

If you want an in-depth look at the XL2 go to:

I don't believe Pansonic has a video on-line like this for the DVX, otherwise I would send you there as well.

Ultimately, renting both cameras and trying them out is the best way to go.

    Hope this helps.

    :D

We were looking at theHVX but wiyh only 7% of households in hd well not yet as well as our next film is a straight to video so we didnt need it for a film transfer. thanks for the balance with optional brick tip!

  5. :(

i have had some serious problems with my canon xl2 camera. Firstly the firewire cable stopped working so i sent it for repair and after a week of using it the power for the machine has just died on me using the battery and the power mains.

Is this a common fault having it cause so many problems. Is there a way that i can check the power has fried the board so i do not have to send it back to them.

I am so pissed off with this

    <_<

I have no idea? Hopefully this is an isolated Glich to your machine only. I'm picking mine up tomorrow.

I have been reading a lot of reviews and have yet to see anyone else having this problem, if I hear of it somewhere else I will direct them to you. If I have it myself there will soon be a gently used one on the market and I'll go back to the 100-A

  6. I have shot two shorts and a doc on the 100-A over the last 9 months, it was a rental. We just bought the XL2 3 days ago I have yet to get over to my directors house to pick it up for my first time of using it.What will I find the pros and cons to be over the 100-A (example) picture /balance/eye piece/ noise/ zoom/ ect.ect!!!!?

What: Indie with 500K budget & name ensemble cast.

Who: Writer/Director with over 35 features under his belt.

Where: Shooting location mostly in Northern Suburbs of NYC.

When: July 18th production start-date and a five week schedule (26 days)

How:  Super 16 to DI. Non-Union production.

The project is a film about a small town, with a large ensemble cast. Fast dialogue. Not looking for cutting edge cinematography. Looking for someone who can think on a larger cinematic scale and accomplish it at this budget. Lot’s of deep direction. Looking for someone with an impressive track record that would be willing to work on this project for what we can offer if it creatively satisfies their need and the attached talent interests them.

This is the first picture we will produce in a five-picture deal. We are looking to put together partnerships, which will translate into at least one more film out of the five. This is a serious production with major heavy hitters coming together to bring this story to life.
