  1. Are you sure you have a 2.5kw bulb in there? Might be a dumb one; but never know. Is there a on and off button that's tripping on the head itself? The ballast itself isn't tripping off isnt it. You can restrike from the head itself with these older models sometimes. And if it doesnt trip on the ballast, you can force the strike on, on the head directly. Finicky but whatever works sometimes.
  2. Hello, I'm comparing 3 HMI fixtures that will get me the most light output on a 16a 230v (French) circuit. Here, in France we are able to get between 2500w to 3000w on a single breaker, depending on the houselhold config and its age. So, all three fixtures: the Arri M18, D25 and AS25 (Arrisun 4k bulbed at 2.5kW) have their own qualities and functions (facetted reflector, fresnel and par lenses) and I'm not here to compare their uses as it depends on the project. I haven't had any time getting all three on the same set to compare - but I've had multiple lamp ops tell me - and some info the web - about the similar light output all three fixtures will get you. I know the M18 is quite efficient and will stand quite close the the D25 - which loses quite a bit with its fresnel - but how about the AS25 with a narrow lens? I have looked at Arri's photometric calculator - but it doesn't seem to always be that accurate to my configs and output on set, beyond the lamp efficiency and age. Let me know if you have any thoughts, ideas or knowledge to share - don't hesitate. Cheers, - Jules.
  3. Hello, I'm lighting an approx. 20ft by 20ft area for a Medium-Wide shot in a large studio, soft high-key lit. Looking at bouncing an M18 on a 20x20ft Muslin (or Ultrabounce?) frame, full front slight overhead - to add as fill/general ambient sunlight. And then using a 1.2k Arrisun (or 1.2k Briese) as a side-y key sunlight source with an opal or 216 diffusion. Just checking if the M18 would be a good bounce source considering it's limited focusing, and if the lighting ratio with the key source at 1.2k (Arrisun) sounds right or wrong? Keeping everything on household power (16A 220v here in Europe). Let me know if you need more info! I know that there is no 'one way' of doing things but just thought I'd hear some thoughts and ideas. Thanks!
  4. Hi all, So I'm running into a little problem, and am a little confused. Basically, I'm having trouble choosing between a FF 35mm DSLR (Canon 6D) versus APS-C DSLRs (Canon Rebels, Canon 7D). I'm very inclined into choosing the Full Frame format because of the of the 35mm mount lenses and the distortion factor problems with cropped sensors. But I'm still not sure, because, as I'm trying to match the film look, the S35mm format rings in my head and I get confused. What would be closer to what I want? Keeping the APS-C sensors size? or upgrading to FF? Please excuse if my question seems ignorant to you, I'm only 17 and still in my first years as a student. Thanks for your feedback, - Jules.
  5. Hey guys, I'm currently working on a short film set in a dystopian future. I'm 17 and have been trying to pursue a career in Cinematography as a DP. I won't go into details about the film or shots, but here are still from the short: https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/47033_611207905561453_2090488972_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/65921_612503248765252_1689622927_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/538346_612941088721468_285493808_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/377657_612941085388135_447684762_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/525153_612503225431921_417038134_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/188393_612503292098581_519469670_n.jpg Tell me what you guys think of the shots, appreciate the feedback :) (Canon Rebel T2i, Canon 24mm f/1.4L, Canon 14mm f/2.8L, Canon 50mm f/1.8)
