What is an external light meter and where could I find one?

Hi, I recently bought a penncrest 400. The shutter fires with AA batteries in it but, there is a mercury battery in the camera. This is a separate battery to operate the automatic exposure meter. I wanted to know if this is necessary for filming, or if I don't need it. If anyone has any experience with this camera please reply. Thanks.
