  1. If a big company asks to buy usage rights and licensing for a video you created, how do you begin to work out the value?
  2. Has anybody watched Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee? It's amazing. Jerry Seinfeld does casual interviews over a drive and coffee with other comedians. http://comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com/ My question is...what's the business model behind it? How is it funded? Who makes the money? Usually the money comes from the network you sell it to but this is a web show, your distribution network is...the website. It says "Brought to you by Acura" and we know Jerry did an awesome Acura superbowl commercial, but why would they sponsor this? They ONLY have their logo at the end for 3 seconds. Is that pretty much it? That's all they need for brand association with Jerry Seinfeld and other celebs? Or is there more I am not seeing? Would love to know! Let's discuss.
  3. Shot in about 2 hours, edited in 8. I thought it would take me 4 hours! Shot with FS700 & Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC. Twixtor used in some parts to mimic 2400fps. Feedback please :) https://vimeo.com/108756025
  4. Hi guys. Is it possible to achieve this effect without expensive lights? Is there some workaround to using limited resources to creating this effect, like using powder/dust to help catch and reflect light?
  5. Hey Jordan, please post this video when it's ready? I've also been tasked with a similar brief!
  6. I'm still amazed that I received a reply from you. Holy crap. I updated my Facebook status about this and people went nuts. Anyway, thanks Gregory!!
  7. Thanks everyone! Great feedback from every single one of your comments :) I'm feeling a little less tense about my first big directing gig on a full production now - It's really the silly things that were getting to me. Thanks again :)
  8. What is the general rule when it comes to takes? I'm sure every director is different, but what is the general amount of takes that one does before moving on?
  9. There is a specific type of editing/shooting technique that is used in film, and I wonder if it has a specific name or description. It's basically where you repeat shots throughout your film, but sometimes change it. For example, in Don Jon, they constantly showed him getting his day started, going to the gym, doing certain things etc... and as the movie progressed, so did his character, and as a result, when the shots were repeated, some were changed, therefore illustrating the change in his lifestyle/character. It was also used in Groundhog Day when the character needed to get a certain outcome. I remember reading about it awhile back but I just can't remember it now, and I need to. I want to find out which directors use this technique, and see how some execute this technique compared to others, and ultimately create my own. Any input?
  10. Ah yes, they followed a tutorial by Andrew Kramer on videocopilot.net :) I totally forgot about that one. Thanks I'll give it a shot.
  11. I have an idea for a shot but I am not certain how to pull it off. It's basically a tracking shot going from left to right, with a wall in the middle. The wall separates two apartment rooms, on the left side is someone in their room in their apartment, and on the right side is someone in their room. In real life, I would break the other walls so that this would be possible but since I cannot, I'm not sure how to do it. Can anyone also post a link or suggest other films/videos where they do this? One example is bad boys 2, however it wasn't a horizonal tracking move, it was a 360 degree move. Shot begins at 46s, as if the camera is going through the wall
  12. Thanks David Mullen. I'm using a Sony FS700 with a neutral picture profile, I have opted not to go super neutral and log like because 8-bit can be tough to stretch in post. The reason I wanted to shoot against the sun is to try do an effect where the subject dances over the sun and then reveals it as he moves, creating an interesting but subtle effect. This what we ended up creating. I'm going to try and see how a reflector works today :) Thanks!
  13. Hi guys, I'd like some tips on how to properly expose an image. Basically we're shooting all scenes outdoors and I need to light my subject appropriately so that the both the background and my subject are exposed properly. Right now I either choose between well exposed background and dark subject, or well exposed subject and overblown background. My first thought was a reflector. Will this work, if so, how big should it be? My second thought was portable lights, I have an 500 LED light panel and battery but it doesn't kick well enough. These videos are just for fun, no clients or budgets. Any tips would be awesome. Thanks!
  14. Hi Mike, still available? If so, can you sell excluding the atomos?
  15. I'm sure there are RED and ALEXA editors here using beast dual-xeon setups, but for the editor who needs something more powerful than an i7 and something less pricey than Dual Xeons, this a worthy build for you. This is how I built my 2014 video editing beast PC. http://www.lucid-media.co.za/how-i-built-my-2014-video-editing-beast-pc/
  16. Hi everyone. I'm planning on selling stock footage online, it's something I've been wanting to do for awhile, as it means I have a little added motivation for exploring and filming a diverse range of scenes & subjects, while also making a little extra pocket change on the side. My question is, what frame rates should I export? In SA, we use pal which is 25fps, and I understand that in other regions they (or you) use NTSC at 29.97fps (or is it 23.976?) so does it make sense to just shoot at 30fps (or upwards if slow motion) and export to 30fps? That way, people can use in whatever framerate they want to. Thoughts?
  17. Did the 5D2 use Magic Lantern RAW or normal h264?
  18. Mike, a company called Earth Touch from my country shot that. I remember seeing a section on their website where they sell stock footage of clips that they do not end up using on BBC/Discovery channel edits, maybe contact them and ask if they have any that they will allow you to use. Good luck!
  19. Thanks Brian, I like the sliding door vehicle idea! I'm not sure how hard mounting my glidecam would help though but I'll look into that. The best I can do is shoot 2.5k with a hired BMCC but if I find a deal for a used Scarlet soon then I'll be able. I've just begun hunting for one but used prices still seem to be too close to new. Thanks for the feedback
  20. Hi everyone. I'd appreciate any feedback on this old clip I did about a year ago. It's been my most 'viral' clip to date and merely started off as being just a camera test. It went viral mainly because of this. https://twitter.com/vincentlaforet/status/320938261327540225 Video:
  21. Hi everyone. I'm not exactly a student or a new filmmaker, but I am closer to a new filmmaker, than a professional DP, so that's why I'm posting here. Apologies to moderators if it's in the wrong section. I'm filming a low budget car commercial for a small community tv channel and I am wondering what the best options are to film a moving car. I basically want to be able to make the most out of a little to no budget as possible, whether using guerilla style filmmaking or out the box ideas, I need some guidance. I want basically get multiple moving angles of a car driving on the road. My options so far are: Film the car out the window from another car. Use a pillow as a vibration/shake absorber while holding the camera on the door through the window opening. My angles and height are very restricted and I can only pan very slightly. Film the the car from the back of a pickup truck (in SA, we call these vans), with a little jib to get some dynamic movement, however while this option provides the most creative shot options, it could also provide me with, you know, death. So I'm not really considering this as an option, but if I found a way to safely set this up then I would do it. Film the car by sticking my camera out of the window and holding the top handle. I cannot hire a 3-axist gimbal to fit my FS700 in my city but I could use my Glidecam, however I don't have much confidence in this option. So you see, I am basically lost for options here. Every bts video I have seen of a car commercial has mind blowingly expensive rigs that are built into vehicles. I need some cheaper options. Thanks!
