  1. I am doing alot of research on filters, and have found some that I really like,.I am also quite proficient with FCP and have Joes Filters as well as the final cut battery of effects.Essentially one can accomplish the effects in post production that the filters affect in the field. My personal feeling is that the time rendering makes it a huge use of time. However I would like some experts views,,like Drew,or Jay!,etc

  5. I AM SHORTLY GOING TO UPLOAD PICS OF MY MOCKUP CIRCULAR RIG, AND THE MORE SERIOUS ONE,,,WHICH BY THE WAY HAVE A LARGER DIAMETER THAN THE FIG RIG,,AND I THINK I HAVE IMPROVED ON IT A BIT,,ALSO A BIKE THING ALL OF WHICH WILL CAUSE PAUSE IN EVEN THE MOST HARDENED STABILIZER USER AND CAMERA OPERATOR!
  6. Does anyone do this so that on rerecord there is always black leadin,,,,,or is there an easier way I hope this is not a stupid question.or perhaps half a minute up front is enough
  7. THanks for your interest,,,I made a mockup and was very impressed with the weight distribution so now I am making a more professional version that I will post the pic for when it is finished,,,!
  8. Brad,,,your comments are duly noted. However,in refining the handheld technique,do you agree that the weight of the camera is a stabilizing base, but ones hands are generally on either side,,.I would make an analogy to a tight rope walker that has a pole,,,(the bottom of the glidecam is sort of in that area,no?),.Whereas both hands being on the camera close together it is much harder to balance.. When you try holding with two hands,,APART,it is remarkable actually how this almost completely "absorbs" footstep shake. In building a mockup,,I find that ,the subtle sensation of balance is more easily informed being apart to my particular sense of stability. It is remarkably simple,>I agree that there is a gimmick,,,However I could not find a suitable substitute in the circular hoop variety. It is a ripoff in the sense that charging 300 dollars for the basic rig ,is capitalizing on a very simple albeit odd looking thing..However at the moment Manfrotto has an edge because there is nothing else out there quite like it.Give it a whirl,,,then I would tend to gravitate towards your point of view.
  9. yes mr figgis does look a bit bizarre ,,,however when I finished my mock up today I was ecstatic about the range of motion and how easy it was to keep very steady,,,your comment about the xl2 though has me wondering,,,?
  10. After using a glidecam 4000 and being totally unimpressed with the weight and cumbersome nature of this equip,,I set out on an exhaustive traversal of the hundreds of ways inde filmmakers adapt invent and even sell plans for cranes etc,,,,and then I happened on Mike Figgis' fig rig,,,,go to the bogen manrotto site,,,and watch all the "fuss",,,I dont know what anyone else thinks,,,but I felt he is really on to something except? the design looked awfully like a large steering wheel with a bar on the lower third for camera,,,,places for clips (for wires) and microphones ,,etc it maneuvers very well ,however the price ,for essentially a car steering wheel, with some extraexpensive clips and clamps,,,I decided to make one myself,,,and I am very excited,,the maneuvarability, and the ability to do low shots and zoom and pan,,,and ,,,like this is really something,,,I think anyway,,,and I made mine for thirty five dollars,,,,!!!anyone out there have a view about this approach towards "steadiness"?

  12. For anyone who has considered tai chi lessons in order to use theirXL2 handheld smoothly and without bumps,,,I have happened on to a relatively inexpensive device called the glidecam 2000 no I dont work for them,,,but I tried a bunch of products and the size ,weight,,,and the ease of use is particularly good if you have a good sense of balance,,,I was always the kid who would walk around the yard balancing long sticks etc,,,,and this device informs your motion through the medium of balance,,,there are obviously infinitely more sophisticated devices,,,however if your company is on a budget, I think you will find this very helpful, I am thrilled with the freedom this will allow for a mulitude of angles and pans, hope this is helpful
  13. I am curious if anyone is aware of a substantial difference between these two adaptors for my xl2 ,the canon seems to go for about 439. at lowest and the optex is 124,,there appears to be a battery for some usage in the canon ,but I have a number of good eos lenses and would like to get whatever is the best for the job thanks for any input
  14. Thanks for all the fine feedback,,,I especially like the idea of using the manual 16X,I have a feeling the is the all around best "hands on" tool with the XL2,,,as far as why the candlelite is a must,,, this is a period piece for a "historic sites informational film"( I do intend on beefing up the back of the sets with lots of halogen lights, umbrellas, etc.,,,lots of fire extinguishers, and at least and one "dedicated" person to overlook them.!my only concern is that I do not light the ladies hoop skirts on fire as there are numerous(ahem) petticoats for such clothing.
  15. I am shooting a movie that is almost entirely lit by candles and I am playing around with various settings ,and lenses, and am trying eos lenses as well to find the most suitable ones,,,I know that when the movie Barry Lyndon was shot,,,it was one of the first to shoot with 35mm lens to facilitate candlelight,,,,has anyone had any experience shooting in an available light (or candle only) setting?I'd love to hear your feedback.
  16. thanks alvin,,,I thought there was something I was doing wrong,,,I am sure there is some shoulder apparatus out there.
  17. I am new to this forum and new to XL2 however I AM ALTOGETHER thrilled lwith the camera,,,however,,,the pad fits way back on my shoulder and is terribly awkward,,,am I just supposed to get used to this squnched position or is there an alternative? also having trouble getting all the data to vanish from the viewfinder,,,I tried to going to display and opening evf but to no avail any ideas for either issue would be greatly appreciated
