  1. Light spilling aside... Any projector type work better in terms of LCD/LED/DLP? I've had trouble with one, but I forgot which one was problematic.
  2. I have one night int car scene in a moving car that I'd like to shoot poor man's process. Two simple overs through the front driver and passenger windows. Does anyone have experience/success using inexpensive projectors for night poor man's process and if so, which type of projector did you use? I know that at least one projector can be problematic, but I can't remember which. Thanks. Best, Andrew
  3. I've always had problems capturing strobes when shooting digital video (either the shutter misses the strobe entirely or only captures a portion of it). I've used the paparazzi light from Lightning Strikes before and it's great, but for this scene I need to see the lights strobe in the frame as the actor takes pictures (actor needs to be able to pull the trigger on them). 1) Any strobes out there that are good to capture digitally? Shooting on the Alexa mini 23.98. 2) Any tricks? I can change the shutter if necessary. Thanks. -Andrew
  4. Production does not want to pay to get an octocopter to fly our mini for one shot, so they've asked me to figure out a more economical way. Does anyone have any experience cutting drone footage with Alexa mini and liking the results? Resolution is not the most important thing, exposure latitude and overall filmic look are the priority. I want to match the aesthetic beauty of the Alexa without the price... I know you get what you pay for in this town, but I was considering getting a drone and using the Sony As7 II. Thoughts?
  5. Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. There are some great ideas in here. I think I sold the director, Joe Dante, on the Bringing out the Dead play it backwards scene, with really long lenses, with a little KY or Vasoline in front of the lens. Should be a wild day!!!
  6. Anyone have any fun in-camera ideas for shooting a dream sequence? So far I've got, tilt/shift, unseat/reseat the lens, and for filters I was thinking of playing with the glimmerglass, promist, soft FXs, etc.) Any other ideas? Anyone use any glass elements in front of the lens (with or without abrasions on it) that they like? Thanks! Best, Andrew
  7. Phil, can you go into more detail? Again, I don't think I can take the fixture down to gain access to the ballast and there is no dropdown ceiling to try and get to it from the side. Adrian put a good idea on the table, but options are great so let me know if you think you could achieve the flicker I'm looking for. Thanks.
  8. Thanks Adrain, the budget is fine on this one so a Litemat is a good options. I can run it off a battery and add the flicker box that Litegear rents so that's a good call. Now I just have to see if it will all fit, but I think I'll be ok.
  9. Hey guys, I'm trying to create flicker on a fluorescent fixture in a hospital. Normally I would dim down on the unit or change the voltage to create the desired effect, but there is no drop down ceiling and I can't get access to the ballast without pulling the entire fixture down, which might not be possible. Has anyone used anything to flicker a fluorescent by where the bulb connects with the fixture? My other option is to find a bad bulb which probably won't be a problem at this location, but I'm not confident that it will look right without testing it. Any ideas? All the best, Andrew

  11. I'm putting together a test hopefully in a week or so over at Radiant Cameras in LA, but does anyone have any experience shooting with the Codex Action Cam? I'm trying to do a POV shot a la Strange Days (1995) with the camera mounted to a head rig and the recorder, batteries, etc strapped to a vest. The shot will be going from a night ext to night int and will be lit, but with a low light feel so light sensitivity is important. If so, here are a few questions I have: 1) How does the camera perform in low light? 2)How is the dynamic range on the camera? 3) I know there are Kowa c-mount mini lenses you can get for it, but any other type of mini lenses that will work with the camera and are still lightweight since it's on the ops head? 4) How does the footage cut with Alexa 2k in terms of color space and dynamic range? 5) Any other small, POV cameras worth testing? Thanks! Best, Andrew
  12. Just curious if anyone has any experience with DJI Phantom 4 drone footage. Specifically: 1) How the dynamic range is/compares to other cameras? 2) How robust/responsive is the gimbal? 3) With proper color grading and some look management, would it cut well enough with Alexa 2K footage for laymen audiences? I know this is pretty subjective, but just trying to gauge opinions. Overall just trying to give a friend some advice, but I don't have the time to test the drone myself. Thank you. -Andrew
  13. There is an in camera lens wobble practical effect in the remake music video of this Joan Jett song for the movie Wayne's World 2 circa 1993. Any ideas how they achieved it? Look around: 0:05-0:06 0:55-0:56 1:11-1:12 - (probably the most visible example) Thanks! -Andrew
  14. That was my feeling as well especially since there won't be too much fast movements or actions to feel the staccato choppiness. Thanks again David!
  15. Does anyone have experience shooting slo-mo that the editor will then speed up to real time in post? What shutter angle makes the most sense for best results of motion blur on both ends? Most likely shooting at 60 fps. Thanks.
  16. Recently I finished a TV movie on the Alexa original. I have a day of pickups both day exterior and night exterior (available downtown LA light) that is all establishing shots. Right now I'm feeling the heat from producers to shot on a lesser camera. The Black Magic keeps coming up, and I was wondering if anyone has had experience in post with Alexa and Black Magic footage cutting together. Again, I don't need to have the Black Magic cut between actors, just establishing shots/ some mood and texture. What is the best version of the black magic in terms of exposure latitude? Any tips for in camera settings to get the most versatile images in post? Thanks! -A Russo
  17. Not totally sure, as I didn't know of the 3.4K Open Gate option. Definitely intriguing. Good to know that about the Hawks. Those are always fun lenses (and fun to try and get a hold of on a budget!). Thanks for the reply, David.
  18. Anyone have any experience shooting anamorphic lenses on the Alexa then cropping to 16:9? I figure I'll shoot 2.35 on the XT then crop the sides so I can preserve 2K resolution, but is there a better way? What are the other pitfalls beyond the operator not loving working off vertical lines in the EVF for framing? Thanks!
