  1. I just finished to edited and grade a new version of my first reel. I'd love if anyone gave me some feedback, especially being this my very first cinematography reel! thank you a lot :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wflYhq1YAM
  2. hello guys! I just finished to edit and grade my first narrative reel, I shot mostly in 2K but I uploaded on youtube at 720p for a better streaming. I've got a question, what's the best youtube setting you go for when you export and upload your reel? it's 720p H264 ok? please, feel free to give me any feedback about my cinematography reel, I'd be more glad to learn from feedback, also being this my first reel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOQ7Pf2F_as&feature=youtu.be Thank you a lot :) Stefano
  3. Hey Charlie! I once lit for a similar scene in a prison, we made everything in a room, we built the window and covered the ground with a black cloth. You need to think well on what's going to be your window, whether or not you use an existing one or you recreate one, and how large you want it to be, then you can work on which lights to use. I used a 1.2HMI to get that harsh shaft of light, plus an open face through a large diffusor frame to fill completely the window. I used just a bounce board at an angle to front fill the actor, and then as the director worked on the blocking I made final adjustments to the direction of the shaft from the HMI. Smoke plays a major role.
  4. Is there such a filter that allows you to focus only on small part of the frame, (not necessarily in the middle, using a very wide lens (and working with f/stop around 2.8)? any experience with any of these filters? the scene is the following: frontal shot of the nurse holding a big siring, I want to focus on the big distorted needle in the very foreground, blurring the rest of the image, and being able to rack focus to the character. Can I do it with a filter on set and not in post? thank you so much :)
  5. Thank you guys! I was a bit worried, also cause of the fact I don't know of many short films shot with the A7s, being more of a still photography camera.. I wonder if any of you know of good and well photographed short films /or even indie films shot with the A7s! if yes any link would be much appreciated :)
  6. using the A7s, anyone shot Pro Res with the Atomos Shogun, UHD 4:2:2 ? any personal opinion on that? how's the signal through the HDMI output? thanks!
  7. yes sorry, I forgot you shot with Arri Alexa, I was thinking about the F5! ok thanks again for the reply!
  8. hey Bruce, I'm a little confused: isn't it a 1.89 master, that becomes 16x9 as you crop the 2048 to 1920?
  9. thank you Satsuki for the input! here an interesting article on the 2K Center Scan mode of the F5 http://blog.abelcine.com/2014/02/13/using-super16-lenses-on-the-sony-f55-in-2k-center-scan-mode/#more-31240
  10. thank you so much David! Always professional and passionate in explaining concepts! Mark, if I manage to get the AXS-R5 recorder I'll shoot 4K RAW, but probably for budget reason I'll shoot internal 2K in S-Log XAVC codec, my problem is that I have a final export requirement in 1920x1080 (and some other DCP in 2K) they want the cinemascope look, so I was concerning if I was going to lose resolution or not! when I set up the markers for 2.40, am I going to record them, or it's just a guide lines and I'll need to put them in post during editing?
  11. Shooting with Sony F5, the idea is to have a final film with a cinemascope look once it'll be projected. I know I can't have the choice but to shoot with the native aspect ration of 17:9 of the F5, I'll so put the letterboxing markers (2.4) that crops the native aspect ratio. My question is: do I lose lots of resolution once I put 2.4 mattes on the 17:9 native to create the cinemascope look? What could be the solutions? If I shoot 4K external could be a better compromise to the loss of resolution? Since I'm recording with an higher resolution then the internal 2K? (When I set the mattes in the camera, do I record already with them? or the markers are just guide lines that help me framing knowing what would be the cinemascope look at the end?) If I shoot with Red Epic (Dragon sensor), what could be the best aspect ratio settings for a final cinemascope look? 6 wide, or do I crop later with the mattes? I can't use any anamorphic so I can't take this possibility into account. Thanks a lot for any help!
  12. Thank you Mr.Mullen! What I don't understand the difference between Master Pedestal and Black Level, I feel like it's almost the same thing: if Master Pedestal works the same way as the knee point, just in the shadows, and Black Level sets where black begins, if I look into a waveform and play with both these settings what the difference? If I make the black level higher I'll see more shadow details, but it's not the same as having an high Master Pedestal, to say, more than 7.5IRE, so to see more into the shadows?
  13. I'm a little confused on how to play with the gamma setting for the lower part of the curve. what's the difference between BLACK LEVEL and BLACK GAMMA and MASTER PED in camera settings? what the relationship with noise? if for instance I want to change the setting of my camera so as to see more into the shadows (without taking into account any color correction in post) I set (just as an example) black level at -2 master ped at +2 so as to lower the contrast black gamma (that alters the whole shape of the gamma curve in its toe) at +2 to brighten the image am I right? my question is: how does noise react to this new setting?
  14. I'll be shooting soon a short film (as DP), and I only have a small amount of choices in term of which camera I can use. I was wondering if anyone has personal experience to share as for how these cameras work in a low key light system, which of these cameras render the black at the best, with which one we can play with sort of gamma settings so as we can get a good latitude? I also have the opportunity to work with Panasonic AF101, but I don't like codec so much beside the fact it crashes the highlights very quickly and can't go beyond 2 stops 2 stops and a half in the blacks, so I was wondering if actually opt to shot with a DSLR. Any ideas? What about how each of them react in a low light situation, if I have to compare these cameras? CANON 5D Mark3 SONY A7s AF101 thank you so much!
  15. How you go about when you expose for black and white? Does an exposure for black and white differ in term of how you do your exposure and calculation with the light meter, from working in colors? Does the highlights and shadows work the same way as they work shooting in colors? Beside any color temperature consideration, how you work with your exposure when you are shooting black and white, you approach it in a very different way taking more in consideration the reflectances on the subjects? I know for instance if you apply a red filter (such as RED #23) the red object will become lighter: how does the gels and color filters work in black and white? any personal experience on making an exposure for black and white? thanks for answering to my very first post!
