  1. The technical specifications always seem to be correct on IMDb. Never not seen anything that isn't true there. However I haven't heard anyone behind 2049 say what this has been shot with. But the Alexa 65 is such a popular camera now that I wouldn't be surprised.
  2. This looks amazing. Looking forward to watching the film.
  3. I've been using mission speakers and a NAD 3020i stereo. I've just connected my TV up to what I use to play records and it helps so much! I don't think I can ever go back to using a TV's built in audio system.
  4. I think Plasmas are great, got one, I just stick a HDMI into my MacBook, watch something from Netflix or iTunes and the quality is great. It took me a while to get a decent sound system as I prefer not to use the built in one to the television.
  5. Exactly! My one bedroom in London is so small that I can't even have friends come round. There's not enough room for more than 3 people. Its not even too central - I live in Hackney (if you know London), and I'm paying a crazy amount for somewhere this small.
  6. I live in London where prices are crazy, similar (but not as bad) to what I've heard about NYC. My place is a tiny one bedroom. And by tiny I mean one bed and a toilet. Kitchen is shared with about 8 other guys haha. I keep hearing that our healthcare might turn private. Maybe my friends aren't reliable sources though... But lets not discuss politics haha. Thanks for the reply, I would love to visit Canada, but I've never thought about working there. Maybe it is a possibility. Thanks for your input! I would love to go to Canada.
  7. That sucks (for me haha) but thank you. Very useful. Its better for me to know now. Its a shame that its such a difficult country to move to and work in if you're freelance. Thanks to everyone else for the replies - extremely helpful!
  8. Hi I hope this is the right section. I haven't posted here much so forgive me if its wrong. In 2017 I will be trying for a living and work visa for the states (to live in NYC). I am still at VERY EARLY stages of deciding on it yet so I have not fully researched. I have visited a few times to NYC so I know it is somewhere I want to live. But I wanted to start here as I am a cinematographer and would love to hear of any British cinematographers on here who may have moved out to the states. Was your process long and hard (I've heard many stories about the difficulty of getting a visa)? What sort of steps did you have to take? I do have family (aunts and uncles) who live there and I have read online that if you have family who are permanent residents (which these family are) then they can petition for you...? Is this true/false, worth it etc? Any advice is appreciated. Oh and please don't make some joke about now Trumps president I shouldn't move there. Thanks!
  9. I like to have a few copies of a script. Anytime its updated I'll get myself a copy of the new one. I make sure these are stapled in the top left corner and have holes punched on the left. I do this to: 1. Keep each copy or version of the script together (no pages in different places) 2. Be able to keep them in a binder because of the holes punched in. I take notes on these. I know some people who like to keep the script clean and maybe stick post it notes or take separate notes on the script. But to me this means more paper and I like to keep it minimal. If I don't have a physical copy of the script then I will always print it. I don't use a digital copy except for when I want to print another copy. I know these aren't programmes for you to use, but I like to do everything by hand. I trust it more and can not have the risk of losing the digital file. Although solid state drives are very reliable now so I'll probably start using pre-vis programmes soon. I've heard cinedesigner is extremely good for digital pre vis. Hope any of this is useful for you. Good luck!
  10. Thanks David, you have been hugely helpful! Thank you, Stuart, Michael & Tyler also! This has been very insightful and useful.
  11. David, Tyler & Michael - thank you very much for these informative responses. I understand your point David, 'You can't make decisions on framing based on screen size'. However one of the things that started me on this topic was a British cinematographer, Ed Moore saying in THIS article, "Consider the average size of modern televisions when planning shot sizes." (This is point no. 21). I'm not saying that either of you are right or wrong, I am glad to hear two different opinions as you have hugely helped me out!
  12. Hello, I am with Ravensbourne University in London, England (http://www.ravensbourne.ac.uk/). For a presentation I am giving, I have chosen to look at, 'How has digital cinema, presentation & exhibition has had an impact on cinematographers?' This will be looking at new ways for audiences to watch films such as Netflix on an iPhone. I would love to hear any of you cinematographers on here to give a response to some questions of mine. I don't believe there are any right or wrong answers, I just want to hear some responses please :) The questions are: Starting with 4 digital projectors in 1999, now 98.2% of the worlds cinemas are digital. This has pushed many out of their jobs as projectionists (a good short documentary about this here: https://vimeo.com/101235645) Are digital projectors & DCP’s a good thing for the industry? The way for audiences to watch films is so varied now. Such as Netflix on an iPhone or watching on your TV. Has your process for your cinematography changed in any way, because the size of screens are now so varied compared to when the only way to watch a film was on a cinema screen? When shooting a feature do you have any sort of talk with a director about how the film will look because the way for audiences to see them is so varied? Is all this digital viewing a problem, would you prefer audiences to watch a film in the cinema? Different stories require different looks and feels through the cinematography, but do you have a preference to the whole film vs. digital debate? Thank you, Dan Hasson
