  1. DHL is horrible! I ordered film from Pro 8mm and when the DHL guy delivered it my neighbor told me he saw him chuck it out the window down our driveway! He barely even slowed down. Luckily it did not damage my film. I was going to put in a compliant but got distracted and I think that since it didn't damage anything I forgot about it. After hearing this story I wish I would have put in a complaint. There's no excuse for that kind of treatment!
  2. With Sony's HDV tapestock what's the difference between the HDM-63VG and the DVM-63HD other than that HDM-63VG tapes costs cheaper??? Anyone know? I shoot with the Sony HVR-Z1U for live events.
  3. With Sony's mini DV HDV tapes what's the difference between the HDM-63VG and the DVM-63HD other than that HDM-63VG tapes cost cheaper???
  4. Walter, Thanks for your input. I've seen some of the stuff you've shot for Nine West and that's the look I'm striving for... But from my perspective (with little experience) I would say that this looks evenly lit. From what you said I'm guessing that from my untrained eye there's a lot of highs and lows that I'm not noticing. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I would guess that you had lights down the length of the runway instead of just at the four corners. In my situation, if I do this again for the next fashion show in 6 months, I'll probably have the same situation lighting on four corners, don't hink I'll have much say in that regard, but I'm trying to come up with some practical suggestions that might help us get a better image. I really feel like we need to soften up the lights I just felt like they were too harsh. I'll see if I can post some footage soon... I'm sure that would help people know what to tell me.
  5. I shot a fashion show a few weeks ago (never shot one before). I'm told to help the lighting tech get the levels right for video. It was a painstaking challenge. He had the lights set up on each of the four corners (not sure what type of lights he had, but there was no diffusion no gels that I could see.) The models where wearing white and I was a having difficult time keeping the image from blasting out. I could get it right on for the lengthier middle portion but once they got to the end I had a hard time keeping it from blasting out. With one camera I was able to set-up a still wide shot and as the models would walk down the runway I would adjust the Iris the other camera followed the models however we could'nt follow and adjust iris at the same time. We were able to edit out all the blasted out shots and it turned out ok. But if I do this again I need to figure out how to work with the lighting guy better so that it's not such a pain and so we can get a more evenly lit runway. I'm not very familiar with setting up lighting as I'm used to shooting without. Any suggestions?
  6. How much does the aaton a-minima go for??? Is there an adapter for the a-minima to accept C-mount lenses? It's just because I already have a few nice C-mount lenses. I don't want to keep spending all my loot! Maybe that's just the territory.
  7. Thanks for that link. I was really turned on to the Aaton a-minima, until I read some posts about people having problems with loading thefilm. I guess maybe that just comes with the territory of 16mm. I've also started checking out the Ikonoskop a-cam. There are a couple of things I really like about it. One... it's small. Two... it accepts C-mount lens which I already have a few of. And three... it's much more within my budget. Can someone share with me the cons of the ikonoskop A-cam?
  8. Thanks for the recommendations. I've been shooting super 8 and I guess I'v gotten used to changing out the cartiges. I've only shot 1 roll of 16mm before with a K-3 and it was just such a pain to change the film, so I switched to super8. But now I really want to experiment with 16mm. What about the Beaulieu R16?
  9. Are there any good 16mm cameras that have interchangeable 100' magazines??? While shooting live events it's such a painstaking process to change film. I really don't want to do the 400' magazines it's just too bulky to carry around. I want to travel light.
  10. I just purchased a Beaulieu 4008 ZMII and I got my first set of footage back and I love it, but I have a question as to exaclty what kinds of Lenses this camera will accept? I see listed on Ebay sometimes Lenses that are C-mount but they're usually listed for 16mm cameras...so... Will my Beaulieu 4008 ZMII super 8 camera accept all "C-Mount" lenses or just C-mount lenses made for Super 8 cameras? Did they make them just for Super 8 and Just for 16mm or are they made to be interchangeable?
  11. Has anybody tried using the Marantz pmd-650 (http://users.aol.com/fmgp/pmd.htm) recording audio with it's Level Sync Recording (LSR) feature??? It seems as if this device would allow me to record audio at the same rate or that would match the (23.976 fps) of a super 8 w/crystal sync, am I right? Is there a CF compact flash recorder that can do the same? or that has this LSR Level Sync Recording?
  12. I've seen comments of other first timers sending in a DLT and having problems with errors on their master. I'm hoping to get my client to approve before I send in the DLT to replication facility, and I found a company that can send me check discs once I do it, but I think it will be a much easier process if I can get them to approve and pay before I send in for replication. That way I won't have to front the money and I'm half debating whether I should even try if I can't get approval. It might be better for us to take the deposit and scrap the project. I've read a few nightmare stories about first timers sending DLT's and getting check discs that don't work. What happens when you send in a DLT that doesn't work or that gets errors? Does the glass mastering house add charges?
  13. My project takes up 3.45 GB of the 4.7GD DVD disc. How do you do this? Do you send in an iso. file or vob.?
  14. I am using Adobe Encore 2.0 I've asked the client to make sure and test a commercial store bought DVD to compare with. I wouldn't be suprised if it's not playing just because their computers are older and somewhat out of date, it's just that I don't want to step on their toes too much about the equipment their testing the DVD with. It's like biting the hand that feeds you, you know. "make copies on various different DVD burners using various different media and at various different write speeds (slowest is not always necessarily best). " Thanks for the advice It's just that I don't have a bunch of different burners to try on and I don't want to have to send them a bunch of different DVD's. But I might have to swallow my pride and do it anyways. The Glass mastering company says that they won't be able to make a DVD any different or any more playable than the one I send them. CDDigital card. Do you think I should try somewhere else. They don't provide any check discs. I bought a DLT drive just for this project, but I'm getting different opinions even from the Glass Mastering House depending on who I talk to, about whether they make a difference or not. Any comments? I understand that when you send in a DVD-R they pull all the info off the disc that they need. But what can they get from a DLT that they can't from a DVD-R? The final outcome is a DVD#5.
  15. Ok the CLient hired me to do an instructional DVD video 3500 copies. I sent them a final copy for approval but the client is claiming that it won't play on their laptop, and that it skips. They wan't it to function on all computers. I tested the DVD on my desktop and set-top player and it functions fine. It's my understanding that DVD are designed to play on set-top players for TV's not solely for computer use. Any thoughts on how I can deal with this client. Is anyone aware of some 3rd party printed info. that could help me.

  17. What I would suggest is to learn as much as yuu can about film and the process of how movies are made using film, and while your doing that keep making home movies with your digital camera (film is defenitely not a cheaper way to do things, for instance just to use an old super 8 camera which is essentially the same film you use in your 35mm still camera just a smaller size, hence 8mm or super 8mm) it costs $30 for the film and then $30 to develop it and that only gives you about 2 1/2 minutes of footage and then the only way you can play it is on a projector, no easy editing on your NLE (Non-Linear Editing system), so that doesn't include the costs of telecine (or getting it transfered to digital format). And don't stop taking pictures with your 35mm still camera, those same basic principles like having the correct exposure will carry over when you start doing film. I think a good book to start with is the "5 C's of cinematography" so you can learn a little bit of history and how the the basic elements of cinematography came about. But when you do feel more comfortable and confident pick up an old super 8 off ebay and try it out, just make sure you got your scenes planned out well cause the second you pull that trigger $ dollar bills go flying out the window!

To matthew Buick, You said "I meant that the site have pictures of the product, loads of technical info, and possibly even prototype reviews, y'know, stuff like that." That's a great idea, and that's all that I meant by that comment. I didn't mean to shoot down your idea, infact (even though your only 15) if we could get all the pictures of the product, loads of technical info, and possibly even prototype reviews, stuff like that then I might sign up for one myself. I guess I was getting irritated with all the negative "it ani't ever gonna happen" comments that were being made. Some of us here are talking about making a new Super 8 that has more gadgets and technical abbilities than have been made with the super 8 before. While I'm thinking that we don't need all of the that. One thing that made the Super 8 cameras popular back when they came out was that they made them simple and easy to use. Now with the improvements to film that Pro8mm is selling, you can do even more than you could before. I think it would be nice to have a "new" camera that strove to be what super 8 was when it came out simple and easy to use. A "prosumer" camera. But maybe others want one that has more of the pro features.

I did not mean for this to be a literal direct comparison. It was simply a way to show that something older and something that, to some people, might appear as outdated could still have a lot of value and use. To some people vinyl records might seem to be outdated and useless, to others there is a great value, nastalgia, and warm fuzzy feeling they get from still being able to play records on there turntable. I collect many records myself. This point could be the same for some when it comes to Super 8 to some it may seem outdated, but to others there is a similar value, nastalgia, and warm fuzzy feeling we get from super 8.
  20. Ok so if I go with 1 camera that saves me $300. 1 Sony VX-2000 (all ready own) 1 Tripod $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic boom pole $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic windscreen $15/day = $ 30 3 Kinoflow 4' 4bank $65/day = $390 1 Dedo 4 light Kit $125/day = $250 5 C-stands $5 ea./day = $ 50 Misc cables/cords flags/scrimms = $250 Total = $1100 What else should I do??? Leftover =$300
  21. It's over a span of 2 days because of the availability of the client and people involved, but it's possible we could finish in one day maybe I could return the equipment early, or maybe I could get all the tight shots done in one day and return the dedo kit early? What would be a good mic set-up? We'll probably only use a little bit of sound from the shoot since most of it will be voiced over in post.
  22. I chose not to put down how much myself or my other two crew members were being paid. And I also have a tripod of my own that I'll be bringing. But for the sake of argument if I had an extra $340 what would you put it towards? Or how would you change the equipment list based on the info I've entailed about the shoot? With a budget of $1400 to $1740?
  23. I'm shooting an instructional video for a home appliance. There might be some tight shots inside of the appliance. The video will be shot in the company's showroom. My budget has been drastically reduced and I'm not sure where to put the money. I need to keep it simple. There will be some shots of someone introducing the product and then most of the video will be explaing how to use care for and clean the appliance. My budget is $1400 and this is what I'm thinking: 1 Sony VX-2000 (all ready own) 1 Sony PD150 $150/day = $300 1 Tripod $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic boom pole $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic windscreen $15/day = $ 30 3 Kinoflow 4' 4bank $65/day = $390 1 Dedo 4 light Kit $125/day = $250 5 C-stands $5 ea./day = $ 50 Misc cables/cords flags/scrimms = $250 Total = $1400 I'm renting the dedo kit because there might be some tight little angles shooting inside of the appliance, and I was told that would be a good light to use.
  24. I really appreciate your feedback. It helps put things in perspective. Especially since my budget has been cut down quite a bit. It would be nice if I could get a full set-up like that, but my budget has been reduced because of various reasons but all in all for equipment I've got about $1400 to work with. I'm going to need to rent everything for 2 days. So this is what I'm thinking: 1 Sony VX-2000 (all ready own) 1 Sony PD150 $150/day = $300 1 Tripod $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic boom pole $20/day = $ 40 1 Mic windscreen $15/day = $ 30 3 Kinoflow 4' 4bank $65/day = $390 1 Dedo 4 light Kit $125/day = $250 5 C-stands $5 ea./day = $ 50 Misc cables/cords flags/scrimms = $250 Total = $1400 I'm renting the dedo kit because there might be some tight little angles shooting inside of the appliance, and I was told that would be a good light to use.
  25. Should I use the Z1U and record in SD mode since it's a cheaper rent or should I get PD150 if I'm going to do that since I'm more familiar with that? Maybe the answer to this question is 6 to one 1/2 dozen the other, but if there is a significant difference I'd like to know. I appreciate your patience. It's nice to have a resource like this to be able to put my questions out there.
