The F55 rents for roughly the same as an Alexa, and they are just as busy. F5s and Fs7s tend to be owner/operator cameras so there are less of them in rental houses.
Sony is not a 'different way of shooting' at all. If you take the time to research your camera, which you should do with ANY system, it is simple to understand. It's not a different system of post either. There are plenty of edit systems which natively handle XAVC, and for those that don't, you can transcode to Pro-Res, which is almost identical to working with RED Raw, or any other flavor of raw. Please stop trying to make out that Sony has some weird post production pipeline, when it's clearly only you that has problems with it.
I think Tyler is slightly right when it comes to renting it out. But still, rental houses I've been to in LA, and SF all agree that the most versatile image comes from Sony.
Stuart well of course you would do your research about how to use a new camera system to learn how it works. But where the Alexa seems more to be related to film, and RED to computer, the Sony is the hybrid. I love the Sony, I think you are misunderstanding that. It's just the fact that the pipeline is a little different from the one already being there, doesn't mean it is a bad thing.
It's that old dogs new trick scenario ;)

I know I am late to this party. And I usually agree with the OP of the thread.
BUT.
I have shoot on the FS5, F5, F55, and F65.
And I would say they are not what you make them out to be. Yes I do not like their menus, or do like the lower end ones. I would however take one any day over the instability of the RED. And with a good grader you can make footage look amazing.
Granted I think it was a mistake to shoot "Cafe Society" on the F65/55 because it just doesn't look right to do a period piece that clean.
But Sonys are great, even the rental houses agree on it. Just a different way of shooting.

Hi there,
I am currently trying to bring an Eclair ACL up to production standard for an upcoming project, and building up the correct gear. Problem is, while I love onboard batteries, I love having a VCLX battery ready to use.
That said I have seen horror stories of BL3s racing because the current isn't going through correctly (this one had the cinetools base).
Is there any danger of just making a cable that goes through the 12 volt?
C -
Anyone knows if technically you could run the ACL of a Anton Bauer VCLX battery?
I am thinking of making my Eclair a production camera for a short in the spring, and together with a video assist, that could be a killer idea. Only problem would be running a lot of it.
I am open to attaching a gold mount / V-mount as well to run it, but I am not sure it will work as good.

Did he reply to you how he made it? Interesting. I have a BMPCC, this would actually give me a reason to use it.
I mean it is pretty straight forward. He mounted a BMPCC to the viewfinder, and then used the HDMI to get the feed out.

Thisis the best idea I have seen so far.
Will take my camera to home depot and test nuts and bolts that might work with my microscope camera.C

I don't mean to sound like I'm on anyone's side, but it seems to me that you haven't actually exhausted all your options since you didn't call him on the phone.
For example, your emails to him might have been flagged as spam. One day I stopped receiving emails from my daughter's school and they were all in the spam folder. Google had decided randomly that it was all spam.
I would suggest that you try at least asking someone to email Les and have him try to contact you.
Samuel, I did.
The seller of the camera CCed me on everyone one of them. And the service deal was setup between me and him so I did have him call him. No response.
And we are not talking 1 or 2 emails. We are talking 15 emails from 2 different people, and it literally was one day to the other being radio silence. If it was coincidence, it was very well timed when we had just figured out that it was his “fault” it was not working (previous emails he was sort of helping with the troubleshooting, or rather blaming I must have broken it).

In that business, your reputation is only as good as your last job, which is why guys like Les Bosher should attempt to rectify situations like what Carl encountered.
Carl, did you try...you know...the telephone?
Calling long distance wasn't really an option.
Also, just to be sure his email worked, I had 2 separate friends email the same day about jobs that they would pay for, and they got reply within hours.
I would never slander anyone, especially if it was just being lost in communication.

Could you perhaps explain this? Les Bosher has a very good reputation in the UK, so if you are going to trash him, you should at least explain why.
That is the exact same thing I heard before I had to work with him.
He did my conversion of my Eclair ACL to S16. Which was not done properly to start out with. He never adjusted the 144 degree shutter, so the image was flickering constantly. And also when I bought it from the seller (on this forum) he sent it to Les first for a service to be checked out.
It seems he didn't even bother checking it, because when I sent it to Bernie at Super 16 inc to have the shutter fixed, the magazines where in very bad condition, and most of the camera needed some CLA. I had not only Bernie look at it, but some local older camera men (in the bay area, that used to own ACLs) and they agreed with Bernie.
And after all this I was offering to have it sent to Les to adjust all this (I said maybe he there was just some confusion when it was sent in). I would even fund the shipping and all (even though he was the one at fault). Since then he has ignored not only me, but the sellers emails and other means to try to contact.
He maybe has done some good work, but all of this is enough for me to never recommend this man again.

Well at least you know the adapter works. Even if the image is squashed down a bit more than you'd want it, that can be fixed in post. I'm not loving the transfer, though, so I'm happy you're doing it over. Did you figure out focus pulling?
That is the proper desqueeze. 1.33
The spirit Telecine we have is old, so it means some artifacts indeed. But it won't be day/night difference.

I will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER, vouch for Les Bosher.
Visual Products and Bernie are real good people that cares. Bosher has no interest it seems.
So send it to him if you would like to waste your dime....

I finally made a transfer.
The Spirit Telecine was not having a good day, so I will go back another day to redo it. As well as reshoot it with more intersting lights to see the effect. -
So, where are we at with that?
Do you have a working video assist?
I have a working microscope camera that runs of 12v plug (could probably be adapted to run of something else). I know the distance I need to mount it to the viewfinder (first idea was to have a steadicam viewfinder, and one normal one). But I have no machine tools at my house to do the leg work...

No scripts, here's your storyline: a bunch of film-loving film students learn that the school is going digital so they decide to go rogue, disguise themselves, call themselves "The Celluloid Raiders" and start storming/disrupting/vandalizing digital projects by other students and capturing the mayhem on film while yelling "Death to digital". They make the news, and decide to start storming real Hollywood digital productions.
No budget allowed. Go.
I've read this movie. I've worked on it. Hell...I have shoot it and never gotten anywhere because the director is an “artist” that is never happy with the final work...
But yes. It will happen.

Carl, please post a picture of your camera with all the stuff on it.
Some of the Les Bosher modified Eclairs have been adapted to take rails. My suggestion to you is get some rails going and keep that Anamorphic adapter in place just like you would a matte box.
On my NPR I'm stuck with a single rail unless I want to go the Kevin Powell route.
I mean the adapter is a screw on. So unless I fit the rods tight under...it will always move with the lens...
C
-
Excuse me, sir, but what have you done for underground cinema all week?
Well, I was going to use some for a music video, but the director was sort of backing out when they realised I have no video tap. And that it would take Fotokem 4 days to process.
So if you have any nice scripts lying around ;)
C

Did you get the step-up ring?
Indeed.
The issue Gregg mentioned does appear though. Pulling focus is well...tough I might be able to oils the threads so the adapter spins more freely, but yeah. Better for static shots.
My roll of 7219 was sent to FotoKem yesterday so I'm excited to see what it turns out?
Anyone has any input on using B4 lenses (with converter) on the Eclair?
Because this pulling focus is not making it easy to use. And I want to shoot my 3000 ft of film I have in the fridge.

Hey there,
I tried googling this but it seems I can not really get an answer.
The Spirit Telecine we have at my school feels a bit limited at times, and the grader knows we can not get the full potential of film. I was wondering if there would be a way to do two separate scans, and later connect them together in the grading process?
I know I will not get the full effect of something that was shot HDRx, but first I want to get all thats possible out of film.
Also, if this process work, would it be possible to tailor it to be screened for Dolby Vision and still achieve a somewhat HDR-video coverage?
Clearly I am a novice, but I am here to learn...

Hey there,
I have no prupose of making ANY money on this so let me know just how to order so I can make it the way you guys like it.
I made this hat

If anyone is interested to have any other Eclair gear made, let me know. I just ordered my second on-set sweater.

Bradley, congratulations on choosing the best 16mm camera that has ever existed.
Jean-Pierre Beauviala would probably think different :)
Also, for shoulder I have only tried the NPR for fun. But the ACL fits a lot better ;)

Hey all,
I've recently been reunited with the ol' Eclair NPR and it's been ten years since I actually had it in my hands.
I have a few questions regarding taking better care of it than I did in the past.
I still use the regular Eclair flight case which is a metal moose to carry around. I would like to switch to a Pelican. Any recommendations as to which?
Do you store your zoom in a separate case from the camera? I didn't, and my original Angenieux 12-120 became heavily fungus infested. Not sure if a Pelican case would prevent this.
Do you store silica gel packets in your camera case? In your lens case? I'm traumatised by the fungus thing.
Any help is appreciated, the NPR is very dear to me and I want it to last another 45 years.

School has this one for the Sony F5 kit. Works great.
But it probably won't fit any mags...

I'm wondering what the image in the viewfinder is going to look like with that adapter.
Slightly distorted. I have shot with the adapter on my 35mm stills camera already.
This is corrected though.

I'd like to see you approach a girl in a bar, smile at her, and hit her with that line.
I'm in filmschool, you expect I haven't? ;)

You mean like this one...I searched "65 to 77mm step up ring" in cameras and photo
Step-Up-Ring-M65x0-75-to-M77x0-75-for-Angenieux-9-5-57mm-lens
EDIT: I can see that you haven't befriended any precision engineers or hobby machinists yet :)
Just coming back to the idea about the front of the zoom rotating...is the anamorphic adapter sliding on rails, or are you just aligning it manually for each shot for these tests.
I must brush up on my Google skills. I spent weeks trying to find an adapter.
Well. I'll order now then!

Very funny ;)
Once you have setup a Sony they actually run pretty smooth.
I have only dealt mostly with RED up here in SF but all units I have used has always had one crash per set, at least. Doesn't matter which silly name I am using. And the menu might be better designed, but touch screen...that's still idiotic.
And blaming poor post-knowledge on the camera is hardly a solution Tyler. C300 looks great for some things, but a good grade, with footage from the R5 recorder, and the F5/F55 looks great.
