While I think that this topic has been thoroughly discussed in terms of objectively sterility, I believe there are other subjective reasons to use a diopter as a creative tool. These tests do show an accurate comparison, but if you incorporate movement and storytelling into the mix, it changes things entirely. For example, below is a single long clip I shot as part of a feature. This is just meant to show some of the subjective qualities of this choice. Mainly, I wanted to throw my focus puller into the weeds and make sure that it wasn't tack sharp always. Since it throws off all the focus marks it becomes a bit of a game to respond, giving it a totally different feeling. Also, since this was a small space, it absolutely removes the ability to focus past a certain point, constraining the framing, and giving it an intimate feel that would have been compromised by seeing deeper into the space, since there wasn't a lot of money for production design.
