  1. hi, i often notice in some films what i call a "glossy look", a very diffused image. think for istance about "big fish", opposed to "the recruit". the first has got this shiny and glossy halo effect and the second one is very crisp and neat, almost in your face. is that "glossy look" achieved with a particular filter or is the film stock itself? if it is the stock which one would it be? and to get a VERY crisp but not grainy look which one would be used? i know i keep asking these things but i am trying hard to learn the secrets of film stocks, and this forum helps freddy
  2. yeah daniel, you are right but at the same time i dont think you should be so cocky and lie like you said you did on that BBC production...i mean i am a student myself and i would do anything to get into the business but i would never risk to make a jerk of myself because i said i had the experience that i actually dont have. most of the times instead people love ambition and passion and they are ready to give you a try...you may be lucky once and get away with it but the next time you embarass yourself when people realise you actually dont know what youre doing
  3. in the end i bet landon is a 78 year old retired DOP who is now missing his job and finally having a wee laugh whilst taking the piss with his posts...and dont be fooled by the picture, its obviously him "rejuvenated" in photoshop. i think we are making this whole darn thing a wee bit bigger than what it is. let the man have fun and let's get back shooting regards freddy
  4. i completely agree with stephen. i mean since youre starting off its better to spend less money unless you feel confident enough that you will be payed enough on future productions to recover the money you spent on the camera. there are lots of cheaper options than that. you may want to check other prices and better deals good luck freddy
  5. the dvd release in the uk has got a much more cropped picture which is definitely narrower than normal anamorphic...but i have just seen this version so i cant tell. it looks a wee bit odd. and was it 16 mm, right?
  6. hey there, does anyone know technical informations about this film? which camera, lenses and film stocks where used? it has got a particular look and i always wondered...it looks like anamorphic but the picture its way more stretched... thank you all freddy bonfanti
  7. hey there, using just diffused overhead lighting wont be enough i guess, unless the source is high. it would leave some shadows on the actors eyes and noses unless thats what you're looking for. since you're on a set you've got more freedom to set your lights up, i would try bouncing some light into the elevator either from above with an hmi and a white board or reflector or from the front. then again it depends how much of the elevator itself its gonna be in shot, where youre placing the camera and how much space you have... good luck freddy
  8. cheers john and eric, helpful and sharp as usual freddy bonfanti
  9. hi, i was wondering which film stocks are often used for music videos, for both 35 mil and super 16 formats. i always notice very crisp and thin images so i wonder if there are "preferable" stocks that do the job better. i understand sometimes dps choose other stocks to get a particular look, but usually images are crisp and well defined... thank you all federico bonfanti
  10. if not in cinematic mode i am pretty sure you can lower the shutter down at 25 and even more...
  11. sometimes shootin with the shutter at 25 helps a bit, it makes it look less videoish for sure...especially in black and white. but as said above there is a lot of post production work, especially in color correction. i guess that i agree when people said if you light it good and get good composition the results will be stunning, no matter what... making video look great is a big achievement!!!!more difficult than film!!! thats my opinion freddy bonfanti
  12. jeez, lads! that was really helpful. thank you all for the replies freddy bonfanti uk
  13. hi i have recently seen jepers creepers and man on fire and i loved the way they both looked. anyone knows what kind of film stock has been used for both films? i may say something silly but could it be reversal? thanks freddy bonfanti
  14. hi all, sometimes i hear people talking about the image they see on the screen as thin or dense, saying that its a particular kind of stock. is thin therefore that crisp and sharp quality of fast films rated at 800 and dense the heavier and less detailed look of slower stocks like 50? thanks freddy bonfanti
  15. why dps decide to push film? if they need more brightness why cant they get more lights in? freddy bonfanti
  16. hi whats the difference when lighting film with fino flos and fluorescent lights? i imagine the film would get a greenish look, am i right? i often think that fluorescent would give a great look, especially if covered with different colored material...
  17. thanks mr mullen, but if the right exposure was 2.8 i reckon i would have had the background out of focus so thats why they told me to get a 4.0, to get more depth of field..NOW I GET IT...i feel so stupid actually, it was so clear! its always reveting and inspiring to get you people's replies, i feel like this forum is a sort of a teaching class!
  18. i do have a light meter, the only thing i didnt quite understand is that on the first measurement the reading was 2.8 so i have been suggested to get more light in order to achieve a reading of 4.0 ... thats what i didnt understand, why do i need a 4.0? is it maybe because of the lens i was using? (9 millimiter wide angle for a 16 mill arri sr2) maybe having a 4.0 was good to get more darker zones and therefore have a balanced shot...i think that must be the reason, i didnt ask why i just wanted to shoot since we had not time at all. having the aperture at 2.8 would have got me a overexposed shot since the middle grey would have been one stop more than the maximum aperture... i am definitely loving my hard way to get to all this knowledge but i just need someone to tell me that was the case and my assumption was right thanks
  19. which lights did you use for the first shot (guy in room) and the one in the cinema?
  20. hi all my question is simple..given a EI number, say 200, how do you know what fstop will be the "middle gray", the fstop that places right in the middle of the curve? thanks freddy bonfanti edinburgh college of art
  21. i am shooting soon an advert and i would like to achieve the soft warm cozy look of a student house party. (main reference garden state, the party scene). i am shooting on vision 2 200T and i was thinking about using diffusion and slightly underexpose it. the camera is a 16mm arri SR2. would you recommend and filter or gel to use to get that soft tungsten light orangish look? but not extreme, just noticeable... thanks federico bonfanti edinburgh college of art

  23. hiya, i just watched this film and theres a few shots i was very excited about, it looks like some primary colors stand out in some scenes like the greens reds and yellows...theres in particular a shot of the soldiers with rifles that carry some yellow granades and that color is "jumping out of the screen"...was that a particula kind of stock like reversal or was something done in post? thanks a lot federico bonfanti edinburgh college of art
