  1. I've read several cinematographers state the best advise they've ever received was to trust their eye instead of a meter. What does this mean exactly? I cannot look at a set and based on the lighting know exactly what the correct (or desired) exposure should be. Are these guys that good? Or am I missing something? Thanks, Mark
  2. So any recommendations for companies that have a Spirit in Chicago? Is there a good resource out there for transfer houses in general? Thanks
  3. Is there a telecine type to look for when transferring to video? I'm new to telecine and I'm wondering what to look or ask for? Thanks
  4. I've read much about the difference between depth of focus and depth of field, circles of confusion and its importance to focus. What I am still confused about is how do you use a depth of focus calculator. If the information tells you the COC for a given situation, how do you relate that to how you set up the shot, focus etc? Do most people only use this if the output is film or is it also used for video output? Thanks
  5. If I shoot film for ultimate destination video is it better to shoot at 30fps as opposed to 24 fps? I know shutter speed increases to 30 fps (on original XTR) but is there anything else to watch out for? Also, I've never telecined before, and was wondering if I shoot on negative can it be reversed in telecine or do I need a print for telecine. I'm trying to decide if I should shoot on reversal or negative to get best image. I probably wouldn't shoot on negative if I needed a print for telecine. Thanks! Mark
  6. Folks: Perhaps I've been asleep lately but today I was informed Kodak no longer offers double perf 16mm film. Is this correct? I still have some double perf stock in my fridge but wondering what the impact will be. I'm also purchasing an Aaton soon which will have Super 16, but I know I will want to still shoot in regular 16. Can anyone point me in the direction where I can read up on this? Thanks Mark
  7. Thanks for the great info and comments. A follow up question on the Aaton: - is the XTR Plus both 16 and Super 16, with it being field changeable. Or does this only apply to the Prod version? - does the the XTR Plus have the ability to have a video tap? I've seen the Prod indicate it as an option. Thanks again! Mark

    Aaton XTR

I'm seriously considering purchasing a used Aaton XTR to upgrade from my Arri 16BL. Any comments/thoughts on this camera? Anyone know of sites reviewing this camera and explain differences between the Prod and Plus, and what is fair market value for a used one? I've also heard that Arri 16SR's are extremely reliable. I haven't heard anything negative about the XTR but I just haven't come across anyone going out of the way to make the same statement. Whats a better value for the money? Arri 16SR or Aaton? Thanks
