I'm basically a complete novice, and hoping to write and shoot some short films in the not too distant future. Because I want to write in a realist vein, I found it quite helpful as an experiment recently to borrow a camera, and take digital photos of the location and use them to construct a storyboard, and I'd like to buy a stills camera myself to do the same in future. Also, simply from a cost point of view, I want to get experience behind a camera, moving or still, and hopefully this will give me some transferrable skills.
So, my question is, are there any particular specification of digital stills cameras that produce stills which approximate to a frame of High Def video, and to 35mm film? It would be good if I framed a shot with a certain lens, zoom, aperture etc. etc., on a stills camera, that I could then work out how to reproduce the same effects in terms of depth of field, the limits of the frame etc on a cinema camera. Maybe there is a set of calculations that can be done to work out equivalences?
