Some of the replies on an online professional archivist forum on Reddit said that they don't care if Epson discontinued their flagship flatbed V600 and V850 scanners. Many said their Phase One camera or DSLR's and copy stands did better. A copy stand is not the same as a flatbed scanner when it comes to archival work. A copy stand provides more harsh results when it comes to defects and silvering. It offers no options for weighted scans on warped material like stereo cards. This is why you see subpar digitization from most archives even with their $90,000 Phase One digitization setups. If a vacuum frame is used, then you could possibly flatten out some of this material. I used vacuum frames extensively in the 1970s, but we used them on thin paper and sheet film, not on thick, warped mounting boards. Even so, vacuum frames are not mainstream or easy to acquire as they once were in the days of graphic arts and process cameras. Within the archive I use camera / copy stand combos as well as various scanners of all sorts. They each have their purpose. But the bottom line is...a copy stand is not a replacement for a flatbed scanner; they produce different results. When it comes to weighted scans, I found that an Epson V600 scanner starts to break with 22 pounds of weight put on the lid. The part that breaks is the film scanning component in the lid. I limit the weight I put on the lid to 18 pounds. You figure out the weight limits for your scanner. Don't go by what I tell you, weight your scanner lid at your own risk. And if you do weight the lid, you will need a thick hard foam backer under the lid to contact the original. The lid alone will not do a good job on heavily warped material. This is #4 out of #6 SSD archival tests underway. The Samsung T7 500GB SSD was formatted on 9.1.22 and 449GB of data was put on it. It has not been plugged in since 9.1.22. I checked it today, 3.1.26 and everything was fine. Future tests will be for #5 / 56 months and #6 / 68 months. I will also retest #4 for a 10-year test. It will test not rewriting the data over a 10-year period with just one plug in to recharge over 10 years. That test is due on 9.1.32. <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. I see some panoramic photos made with pieced together photos. Did they have a special camera for that as well as single shot panoramic photos? Looks like train was moving, yet a pieced together pano. Some of the pan photos had uneven exposure, like they were made with a swing lens camera. Although this is not the best example, it gives you an idea. I got my booze right next to my computer. I'm ready to go! Actually, I don't drink. I just use the rum in eggnog. About 2.5 oz per 1/2 gallon of nog. It is just for taste, not for getting drunk. (Can you even get drunk from alcoholic eggnog?) During Christmas '25 I ran out of Mount Gay rum. I've been using Mount Gay in eggnog since the 1990s. I could not get any here. I tried whiskey, brandy and a few varieties of rum. But did not like them as much as Mount Gay. Yesterday finally tracked down some Mount Gay. They changed the bottle, but it seems to be about the same as the old stuff. Well, eggnog season is over, so will test it when Thanksgiving comes up this year. I will have to see where I can store the rum. Place is packed full of stuff. Mostly archival material and cine' film. No room for anything. Don't get into cine' film work unless you got space, which I don't. I've been scaling back some on archival work over the last couple of years. I went from a digital and physical archive to an all-digital archive. It made some difference in room, but I need to digitize more material so it can be trashed or sold. Most of the stuff can't be sold for anything worthwhile, so it just gets trashed. If I can't get $25 or $30 for thing or a group lot on eBay, it gets trashed. No time to screw around. For the digital end of things, I'm thinking of stopping archiving spam emails by the end of the year. I've got a little over 1000 individual spam emails and about 1100 bulk spam emails. I used to do a lot more work with bulk spam documentation but eventually had enough of it. The only 3 areas I didn't do with bulk spam was spam received in 1 month, 6 months and 1 year. After I did 1 week and ended up with 36 pages of screen shots I gave up on any longer length archiving. If the 1 week of 501 spam emails stayed constant that would mean I would have to shoot 1872 screenshots to do the year. Too slavish for me. Spam is just an afterthought I do with my archiving work. But afterthought or not, it still takes time document and put online. Here is an example of bulk spam received in 1 hour on 10.27.21. Here is just 1 page of 36 pages of spam from 501 bulk spam emails received in 1 week. +/- 9AM to 9AM December 9, 2022 to Dec 16, 2022 You don't like spam? Don't put your email address out there. I didn't care, plus putting my address out there helped the archival work with spam. I've cut out a lot of areas of acquisition for the archive over the last 2 years. I got way more than enough of certain subject matter for me needs. I'm about there for farrier / blacksmiths. Unless you specialize in an area from A-Z, eventually you get enough samples of a thing to do a good job documenting a subject for the historical record. Aunt Jemima is another area I closed down to new acquisitions. Even so, I still get more Aunt Jemima without trying. They show up as ads in old magazines I pull ads out of. Plus, I have lots more Aunt Jemima that needs scanning. DDTJRAC / Harvard Special Collections It is interesting seeing Aunt Jemima change over the years. I used to put my name / label on material more so in the past. These were scans I did years ago. I gave up marking individual scans more or less. I still mark bulk scan projects like catalogs with a few labels. But naming things is more drudgery work that can be cut out. Here is something you should know if you deal in hir-res material. Some of the watermark software degrades the resolution of the file. I had to do the text for digital watermarks by hand with Paint. That was tons of work, so generally gave it up. I try to offer decent res material and the watermark software I had was definitely a no-go due to file degradation. In the beginning I never put my name on anything. But I have been banned far and wide off the internet; so, one day I decided to put my name on things for the historical record. As in...to show the historical record my archive existed at one time before it is banned completely. It is just terrible how things disappear off the internet so fast. I started to name / label things after Tumblr pulled the plug on me and deleted all 48 of my websites I had worked on for 9 years. Years ago, one of the things that got me started with archival preservation was when a video on YouTube was taken down before I could finish watching it. The Wayback Machine had a few snapshots of some of my Tumblr's. But only a sampling. Here is one old Tumblr of mine. Well, on 2.4.2026...that's the score. Here is a full-res screenshot of what is offered for a PDF. You never know when you work will be the last extant copy of something for the historical record. If the original is a poor reproduction, then record it in the archives as a low-res original. Sometimes all the archivist has to work with is shit, so then it is not your fault. No one will hold you accountable for doing crappy work. But if you have the control over the end result...don't produce garbage with your archival work. I've surveyed tons of online archives over the years. The vast majority of them produce low-res garbage. It is really sad how most archives are run. This is the temp backup to 25GB BD-R made on 1.22.2026 of a 5-week project still underway. Photo: D.D.Teoli Jr. I hope to be done with this project in 2 -3 weeks. When all is said and done, I will have about 2 months of part time daily work on this project dealing with over 7,000 files. While work is in progress it is backed up to disposable grade Blu-ray disc at about 22GB increments as well as hard drives. If the work is very slow going and tedious it may get backed up to Blu-ray in 10GB increments...it just depends. Once project is finished it will be put on large size Blu-ray M-Disc and archival Blu-ray disc and a variety of hard drives. Disposable Blu-ray discs are generally 35% to 40% of the price of archival grade Blu-ray discs and a fraction of the price of M-Disc Blu-ray. If you have a large budget, then use archival grade Blu-ray for everything, even disposable work in progress where discs may get trashed in a few days or a week or two. During post processing disposable Blu-ray are also used to view films in various stages of post work. Generally speaking, I don't make PDFs of my material. I have no easy-to-use PDF software, nor do I have extra time to screw around making PDFs. Within the archive I generally offer hi-res JPEGs. People can make their own PDFs from my JPEGs if they like. But...I do make tons of PDFs on the fly and with no software, fuss or muss. I generally make these to document websites I visit instead of shooting screenshots of their website or to memorialize notable things I find online. But before you do all this, search to see if the site already has a PDF that they offer. Sometimes it may show up in a Google search, when it does not show up at the website. Here are 2 example PDFs I made a few minutes ago with the method below. Right click, then left click on print. Save as PDF. Sometimes you have to point the cursor at the highlighted material, other times you have to point it at white space before clicking. 2) If that does not work, you just try right clicking on the page and hitting print. That later method is what I did here, as the highlight and print did not work. Sometimes neither method works well and you have to archive it via screenshots. I've written about screen recorders before. Look it up. Another possibility is to do a full-page screenshot with Windows. But that is my least favorite as it is low-res. When you are out and about and see something notable, spend a few seconds being a citizen archivist. I bought a collection of about 75 Gong Shows on DVD for $25. They are all scoped VHS airchecks various people made over the years. They were collected and put on DVD to sell. I'm glad they had VHS recorders to archive some of this stuff back in the day. From what I gather, The Gong Show will most likely never be put on an official DVD set. Too many music releases and other legal issues to deal with. So, whatever you find is underground. Does not matter to me, I'm an underground archivist. I cut a few of the shows off the DVD's for the historical record. There were a lot more that could have been cut off, but I have no lacky intern to do it and the scope of my archive is humongous. Some don't have digital tuners, and you have to buy a digital tuner to use them. I have to buy them used off of eBay. They discontinued them years ago. Maybe it was due to TPTB not wanting people to make DVD's from broadcasts. Dunno. Some say it is a financial thing, aka profits. I don't think so. Used models sell for a lot more $$ than new models did back in the day. I also use DVD recorders to transfer VHS to DVD. Here is a sample transfer from VHS to DVD via the DVD recorder. It is the special features in a VHS tape about Cynthia Plaster Caster. This was a notable VHS as it marked the era when VHS was moving over to DVD. DVD recorders are very useful whether you are an archivist or not. Some of my DVD recorders are starting to show their age. They have an HDD recorder in many of them as well, but I don't use it. I guess I should get back on eBay and look for some more used DVD recorders to hoard. It is work. You may search for weeks or months for decent ones. You can usually always find one or two fast on eBay, but they want a fortune for them. I've bought some that didn't work and you have to fight the seller to send them back for a refund. Beside $, space is an issue. If rich, I'd have 20 - 30 DVD recorders stacked on chrome wire shelving. Same thing with VHS and Betamax machines. I only got a handful of VCR's left. Everything requires storage space and space is lotsa $ nowadays... I just don't like to think about this stuff. I like to know I got the gear to do the job and not worry about buying more gear all the time. When you get to that state it is most enjoyable. You can relax and do your work. I've been working on organizing a digital archive I acquired. The collection consisted of nearly 7,000 photos and was about 150gb in size. Originally it was near a terabyte and was all TIFF files. First thing I did was convert to JPEG. Too much godlike qualities are put into TIFF as opposed to JPEG. Here... 31 Generation JPEG Degradation Test D.D. Teoli Jr. A.C. : D.D. Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive I've done tons of testing in this area. If I do any photography I still shoot in RAW for important things. But generally speaking, I'm all JPEG now. I looked through the collection a few times and just started to make folders for breaking it down. As I filed photos, I made more folders or combined folders as they seemed fit. And so forth and so on. As shown in the photo, eventually I had enough folders for the material to be sorted. As I sorted the material I made Blu-ray disc backups. This is time consuming work and don't need any f'ups. Cheap Blu-ray discs for temporary backup are only .40 cents each. Just let me stress for .40 cents they are not archival grade Blu-ray. But they don't need to be, being for temporary back up while the work is in progress. There is no magic bullet to getting it done, you just chip away at it every day. One piece of advice... If you decide to use lots of the photos in multiple categories and you plan on extensive post processing. Do the post work first and the sorting second. If you keep the same file name, then you can replace them easily with a search. But if the names are changed it can be a lot of work that could have been avoided. <><><><> Daniel D. Here is an old post from one of my blogs. It is a direct copy and paste, so it is kinda rough. I wrote it many years ago. I was clued into saving ephemera around 2012 from a curator of a special collection library that brought it to my attention. Moviemaking especially needs to preserve related ephemera before, during and after production. Just a note...I removed one photo from the original post of a giant group of vintage homosexual explicit photos I was laying out on the floor for organizing one of my artists books. When I am speaking of ephemera, I am referring to the ancillary items that pertain to the production of art as it relates to the artist. For instance, when Robert Frank was applying for a Guggenheim for his Americans project, he had the foresight to keep his rough draft for the application proposal. Trials, tribulation and failures must be preserved just as well as success. When W. Eugene Smith could not pay his bills he would pawn his camera gear to get by. I read when he died he only had $18 in the bank. Many artists make great sacrifices in order to dedicate themselves fully to their art…make sure it is documented! Pawn ticket for camera equipment W. If you have the room and finances, the best thing to do is to ‘act as if’ and try to preserve a legacy the best your space and budget will allow for. One of the easiest methods for basic ephemera preservation is to get a letter size archival drop front box and throw things into it as you would a time capsule. Internet Photo If you are short of space and $ then all is not lost. You can preserve your ephemera archive digitally or even make an artist’s book composed only of ephemera. In any case, it is always good to have both digital as well as physical preservation going for you. Nick Cave’s notebook When I finished up my project The Americans…60 years after Frank I saved the map that showed my travel plans for a mid-America portion. Well, it got lost. Through the years, from a combination of many geographic moves, storage units, natural disasters and carelessness I have lost a good portion of my archives and photography. In 2001 a flood in Ohio destroyed the bulk of my photography from the 1980’s and 1990’s. I also lost all my early ephemera as well. I was all analog back then and had not made the move to digital. If I had digital copies of it off-site, that portion of my body of work would have survived. The proverbial moral to the story…have backups…lots of them! The intro written by Jack Kerouac for The Americans by Robert Frank. When it comes to ephemera that is art based, many times I will mark it to distinguish it from my first quality work. I learned the hard way that this needed to be done. When placing the Encyclopedia of Photographic and Fine Art Ink Jet Printing Media I had sent out a 30 page sample to an institution that requested one for their acquisition committee to vote on acquiring. The sample book was just a mish-mash of pages from some of the 12 volume set. I had sent a cover letter with the book explaining it was not a true copy of any of the volumes, but the letter seemed to have gotten lost and the book survived…in their library as a true copy of the Encyclopedia! From that and a few other bad experiences, I learned I had to stamp material that is not representational of my first quality work so that there are no confusion down the road. I don’t mind putting art ephemera out there, as long as it is clear as to what the material actually is. I always tell you my middle name should be scanner. Well, screen recorder is right up there as a 2nd choice. Today I hit 30,000 knives in my online knife and sword survey. ...all made with a screen recorder. Gold is always in the news nowadays. I did multiple surveys with the screen recorder on gold, silver and other metals. Lots of companies don't make catalogs any longer. I wrote to Black Diamond and asked if they had a 2025 catalog. Answer was no, not even a PDF catalog. So, sometimes I make catalogs myself. I make a screenshot survey of a company's website with a screen recorder. OK, this isn't a screenshot. But I did originally shoot it as a screenshot. Then went to eBay to buy it and scan it proper with my large format 11" x 17" scanner. You see photos online you can't download, movies, gif, etc. Downloading is blocked. Use a screen recorder. People will say they can take a screenshot without a screen recorder. OK, go do it for hundreds of thousands of images. I blast out screenshots like a machine gun...7 days a week! I'm not a sociologist, but I am kinda like a sociologist. A section of my archive's scope deals with houses and how people live. This house has an interesting feature, a movable Island. I'm not interested in buying the houses. I just like to record how people live. Each house may have 80 - 130 screenshots in the survey. Tens of thousands of photos all done with a screen recorder. Here is a movie called 'China Doll' I made with a screen recorder. It is made from +/- 450 still screenshots I shot in a couple of hours and is about Chinese silicone love dolls. When younger I was a street photographer. I am trained at fast shooting, not in f'ing around. This is the kind of movies I like to make. Boom, you are finished with them in a couple days and on to the next project. To do moviemaking right you have to be very anal aka methodical. That is not me. Sure, I like high quality work, but it also has to be fast. ADD won't go for much analness. That is why running a movie archive fits my personality best. I didn't bother to distinguish the few videos I did as being made with a screen recorder. Sometimes I will copy a video with a screen recorder just to watch it later and relax with TV viewing instead of computer. Then I trash it as it didn't have that much interest in it after all. I get lots of dirty archival material to work with on the copy stand, sheet fed scanner, cine' and slide scanning, etc. I use compressed air to help clean things, along with other cleaning methods. The compressed air was a gigantic breakthrough once I started to use it years ago. Before that it was a rocket hand blower. I don't have a permanent place to work; it is all temporary setups. A wood clamp gives me a place to park the air gun...temporarily. I still use the rocket blower for delicate jobs like lens cleaning. I don't want to blow dust inside the lens. But for 95% of the work, it is the air gun. Don't forget to drain the compressor once in a while. I do it weekly. In the humid Rustbelt we got lots of moisture in the air. I had posted my 3144 page book disassembly thread at a photo forum. They poo-pooed the BW scans because they have some transparency due to the nature of the thin paper. Consequently, some of the printing on the verso shows through. They recommended I use a black backer. Well, I'm not new to scanning or black backers. I've been scanning since the late 1990s. And I've experimented with black backers from many years ago. The black backers do cut the transparency way down. But the tradeoff is they do not reproduce the original faithfully. You just have to pick which way to go with this type of job. Poor quality color and white reproduction scans with less transparency or a faithful reproduction with more transparency. You can work on the black backer scans in post. But that only goes so far. And to do post on 3144 scans is too much for me. Batch processing never seems to do the job on these vintage scans and there are always problems. So that slavish job of post processing 3144 scans would be for someone else. And that someone else would hopefully be getting paid to do that job. Here are some test scans with white, black and various shades of gray backers. The top of the scan shows the type of backer used. The file name also tells which backer was used. The light gray backer does the best job with reproduction other than white. But if offers the most transparency of the dark backers. Another problem beside off-color reproduction with using colored backers is the originals on this job barely fit the scanner. Very little wiggle room. Some of the type can be tight to one side or the other as well as the top. If the scanner had a dedicated dark backer that would help with this problem. But when you position the original off the edge of the scanner trying to split the difference and then have to hand overlay a backer on it, the original invariably moves. You end up scanning and rescanning the same original over and over again trying to get it right. That is fine for a handful of scans, but not for 3144 flatbed scans. Download these files so you have a library of test scans. And if you do use colored backers for scans, make sure you are happy with the post job to make them look acceptable. If you have a sheetfed scanner and use the 'scan both sides' option, sometimes that helps with reducing transparency. It just depends on the original. And a copy stand can help with transparency. When cutting up a book to scan there are a number of battles to deal with. One is copyright. The other one is defacing a book. Only you only can decide which way to proceed...for the greater good or the greater right. Bound book was +/- 3.75" thick. Cover was cut loose by cutting through the end sheets. Individual sewn book signatures were cut loose and further disassembled from there. Edge photo of cut binding shows the crooked cut this guillotine cutter produces. Old school guillotine cutters produced square cuts. From my limited experience, modern imports in this price range do not. This type of guillotine cutter is only useful if the gutter of the book is wide. I've tried 3 different cutters of this style, and none of them produced square cuts. If the book has a narrow gutter, this cutter may cut into the text or illustrations of the book when disassembling the book due to the crooked cut it produces. Books with narrow gutters have to be disassembled by hand. The guillotine cutter photo is from the internet and used under the auspices of fair use. The book was hand scanned at 300dpi (BW) to 600 dpi (Color). A 300-dpi scan can be made in 10 seconds on my flatbed scanner. A 600-dpi scan takes 23 seconds. Time difference is not normally a big deal. But multiply the time savings x 3144 scans and it adds up. Working 7 days a week part-time, this project will take 3.5 to 4 weeks to complete. And that is for raw scans. For 600-dpi scans it is 7.5 to 9 weeks for scanning this project part-time. Post cleanup work will add a lot more time to the project. A sheetfed scanner was not useful for this project. The catalog's paper is thin which produces wrinkled paper issues on the scans. Also, the ink used in the book is matte black which transfers to the black ink to the scanner rollers. This will leave marks on the pages that run down the full length of the page like black tire tracks. Lastly the book is old and dirty. Dirty originals lead to lines on your scan when using a sheetfed scanner. A speck of dirt on a flatbed scanner, is a speck of dirt. A speck of dirt on a sheetfed scanner is a white or black line that runs down the entire page. I started taking short road trips after I got my license at 16. I'd take day trips to Desert Hot Springs, Indio and 29 Palms. I had visited them as a kid when my family visited friends there. From there I took an overnight drive to Yosemite. I had a little VW bug. I got sleepy driving home at 2 AM, so pulled over on the highway to sleep. I slept in the back seat all jammed up. Then I took some day trips to the Sequioa's and Tiajuana. I was pretty broke, so no motels. Back then they didn't have restrictions on new licensees like they have now. Once you got your license...you could just drive! I didn't get into longer road trips until I got a cheap van. I guess all the early road trips I took instilled a nostalgic note in me when it comes to road trip films in the film archive. Recently I came across a fantastic 16mm home movie road trip film series called "All 48 in our 88 in 58." Sadly, I found out about the series after all the reels were sold except 1 reel, which I acquired. The collection was broken up and sold to different buyers over a number of months. Too bad it was not kept intact and sold as a collection. Here are some frames from that film. (All photos are from the seller of the film.) I always love when the road trip reels have progress maps in them. This filmmaker was pretty talented as far an amateurs go. He had nice comp, focus and exposure and a dash of creativity. That is all you can ask for! This reel was #9 of the series. Who know how many reels were in the series to cover all 48 states. If you look closely, you can see the name of their expedition on the back on their Olds 88 station wagon. As a bonus, I got some footage of a cable shovel on the road trip reel. Steam and diesel cable shovels are another area of collection in the archive. Lots of roadside attractions in the road trip reels! Looks like they did lots of camping, but maybe it is just a break for lunch. I wonder if they stayed in motels or camped all the way? The wife was in high heels a lot of the time. But she had changed for the cookout. That is the problem when a film series is broken up, you just have to guess. The wife would get out there in the fields, even in high heels. Maybe she is picking up a memento here...dunno. I got lots of other road trip films in the archive. Hopefully I will get a scanner someday. I got millions of feet of fantastic films! And if not, the best a person can hope for is that a picker gets ahold of them and they get resold on eBay if they kick off. That doesn't mean they would ever be online for viewing, but it beats them all being trashed in the nearest dumpster. Just never know how things will go. That is why I started to put up a few frames of the exceptional films online. I try and preserve something from them in case they all get trashed. You know the deal...something is better than nothing. It had just occurred to me this year to start saving the frames used in the online sales to include in the film description folder in the master film inventory. My preference would be to include a film sampler of the entire reel in the folder, but you need a scanner to do it. If no sampler is available, then a few snapshots of a film is good to have. A sped-up film sampler is a fantastic tool to have when you have thousands of home movies to deal with. They are good to have for any movie and not just home movies. But home movies are especially hard to deal with when they have no central theme. Here are examples of films sampler experiments I did to show you what I mean. Sampler experiments were made with still frames as well as by speeding up the film. There is a sweet spot that gives you a decent snapshot of a film along with being fast. When scanning gloss stock that is warped it is hard to get a good contact with the scanner glass. In this example the warped gloss stock produced a rainbow type of defect while scanning. Weighting the scanner lid can help get good contact with the original. Foam backer board must be used under the scanner lid as the flatbed scanner lid provides poor contact. 18 pounds of weight was used here. If you go above 22 - 24 pounds on the scanner lid, an Epson V600 scanner may break. Every scanner is different; you check its weight limits out for yourself. No matter how you slice it...film collecting is messy business. Sure, if rich you can match your cans, barcode, have lots of horizontal or vertical film shelves and temperature-controlled film vaults...but it still boils down to film cans or reels on shelving...or the floor. And when you run out of shelving, you use the floor for shelving. I found this photo on the internet, along with the rest of these photos. This guy titled it reorganizing film, so maybe he has the shelving, and the floor storage is just temporary. 35mm is for the big boys. I just deal with 8mm and 16mm. Temporary or not, floor storage is very common for film collectors if you are short on space or shelving. It is common to see film jammed on shelves any way they can fit. Here is a smaller collector and is neater about it in his man cave... In the old days they made film shelving to store film vertically. But they are very rare to come across nowadays and they cost $$ when you do find them. For me it has been a lifetime of being short on space. Space cost $ and I've always worked on a shoestring budget, consequently I have always been short on space. Even growing up I had no space as a kid. My parents didn't have a lot of $ and I grew up in a 1 bath 4 room house in L.A. My bedroom was a foldout bed in the living room. An old gal down the street saw some of my film archive and said I was a hoarder. Some of my films being organized from M-R... I told her I'm not a hoarder, I'd just short on space. I've got a few million feet of film and if I had more space and shelving the same thing, she called hoarding, would not be so jammed up. So, if I am a hoarder, it is being a 'hoarder by design' and not by desire. I rather have tons of space and shelving...but I don't. A real hoarder fills up any space they get no matter how large. That is the acid test. Anyway, she inspired me to expand my shelving for cine' film with 3 or 4 more 6-foot-tall chrome wire shelving units. I don't have that much room for them, but I can put them on casters and double stack them. When I need something from the rear shelf unit, I pull out the shelf unit in front of it. I am not really a film collector; I'm a film archivist. I don't necessarily want the films; I just want decent digital scans of the films. My goals changed in 2023 from maintaining a physical archive to becoming a digital archive. But it is a benefit to education as well as the archival record when you can handle, inspect and smell the films versus just dealing with scans. And in the big picture, it is hard to get rid of everything even if you want to go all digital. Vaccumate was one of those film preservation treatments they did back in the day along with Vaporate. This sample of a Vaccumate treated film is marked with a 3. Maybe they had different versions. It is all just guess work. I could not find out anything about either treatment. Although you can't see it in the scan, the Vaporate film did seem to have a matte finish applied to the stock. I read that HDD's lose magnetism over time and they must be re-recorded periodically to preserve the data. On 3.8.2025 I tested a retired Toshiba 500gb HDD that was formatted and filled up about 98% capacity with photos and videos on 2.17.2015. After it was retired, it was put in a ziplock bag and stored in a garage where temperatures ranged from 45F to 85F for the 10-year period. It was not run during that time. When I looked at it, all the data (photos / videos) were fine. I didn't do any drive software tests on it, as I didn't have any to use. I downloaded some drive software awhile back and it took over my computer, so I was happy to get rid of it. I archive audio, photos, videos and text files. Either they work or they don't work...those are the tests I'm using here. I then decided to do a microwave test on the HDD. I had originated this use of microwaving drives by accident. Last year I had ordered a 4TB Samsung SSD and it had problems from the start. But I was hopeful the bugs would work out and tried to use it anyway. I was transferring a 1.8TB file to it and it jammed near the end of the transfer. I was horrified to find out it would not let me delete my data before sending it back for a refund. Hence the microwave came into my head. It was a natural offshoot from using the microwave to treat moldy and mildewed paper, which I do regularly. I can't tell you how long this original microwave test was on the 4TB SSD, but it was just a few seconds. I didn't know what would happen or if it would wreck the microwave, so it was short. When I plugged the SSD into the computer it would not show up. I was happy with the results and gave it a little more microwave radiation after that for good measure. All we hear about nowadays is EMP danger with digital, so that also inspired me to do some microwave tests. Here are the tests for the HDD, SD card and thumb drives tested in a 1000-watt Samsung microwave. Toshiba 500gb HDD 1 second microwave test: Passed (I don't think the microwave does much microwaving in the first second.) 2 second microwave test: Passed 3 second microwave test: Failed - drive made a loud pop and sparks near the cord port. Computer would not recognize the drive. (Drive was microwaved without the cord.) Generic 4GB SD Card 1 second microwave test: Passed (I don't think the microwave does much microwaving in the first second.) 2 second microwave test: Passed 3 second microwave test: Passed / Failed (?) Some sparks. One computer would not recognize about 80% of the files and they only showed up as icons. When I clicked on an icon it would not load and it said the file was corrupted. Another computer played everything fine. 4 second microwave test: Failed - card made lots of sparks, plastic started to melt in spots on both sides of the card and there was a strong burned plastic smell. Both computers would not recognize the drive. Note: This test should be rerun with multiple cards for 3, 4, 5, 6 second tests to pinpoint the failure. I used 1 card and it received a total of 9 seconds of microwaving before it failed. (Not counting the 1 second test.) Generic 8GB Thumb Drives I used 2 thumb drives for this test. Thumb drive #1 1 second microwave test: Passed (I don't think the microwave does much microwaving in the first second.) 2 second microwave test: Failed - drive made an audio sound when inserting into the USB port, but the computer would not recognize it. I tried it on 2 computers. Thumb drive #2 3 second microwave test: Failed. Drive made a loud pop and sparks inside of the USB connector. Both computers would not recognize the drive. If you have films with vinegar syndrome, they have to be stored open air. If they are stored open air, they generally stabilize more or less. And if you want to be sure about halting vinegar syndrome, you vacuum seal the film and freeze them. Nothing cures vinegar syndrome, but you can slow it down or halt it. These films shown have been stored open air for a few years. The previous owner stored them sealed in metal cans in a hot storage unit in L.A. for many years. Once they were aired out, they have not visually deteriorated further since they were stored open air. Most of the vinegar smell is gone; but if they are returned to film cans, especially non vented, the vinegar syndrome will start back up. Vinegar syndrome is caused by a lack of ventilation and heat. It is best to air out films on wire racks so they can breathe on both sides. Or you can stack them with a film core between the reels. The films shown are just a small fraction of the hot L.A. storage unit film collection I acquired, and I don't have room for that. But they have done OK being aired out as shown. You can flip them every year or so, but these have been sitting as shown for years. If you have your films in cans and they are acetate...you have to burp them once in a while to de-gas. When I first got this collection, you could smell the vinegar from across the room. Now the vinegar is 'almost' undetectable with the nose. Other reels still have a noticeable smell, but they have decreased with the vinegar odor maybe 85%. If your films are warped or start to develop flats you can reverse wind them. None of the chemicals being marketed to handle vinegar syndrome have done any good from what I can tell, and I've tested most of them, if not all of them, over an 8 year period. You can get PH / A-D strips to see where your films fit in with the vinegar syndrome. I don't use them. I'm not that anal or scientific. Film is just one small area I work in. Not enough time, money or space for everything. Plus, the A-D strips need to be enclosed in the can with the film to work right. These films will never be returned to a can, so the A-D strips are not of much use to me. But if you are of an anal nature, strip your films and chart them! I just use my nose. Now...it just depends on the material. There is plenty of vintage photography on the market that is dirt cheap. These are usually cabinet cards or CDV's of people...the plain Janes or Joes. But anything notable in vintage photography is usually pricey. And one of the most highly prized and $$ areas to collect is occupational photography, especially daguerreotypes. I was lucky when I acquired this occupational tintype. It was somewhat affordable because it was in such poor condition and the image had to be extracted from it in post. It is a large size tintype measuring 6-3/8" x 8", so that was a bonus. Larger images offer more detail to extract. Post processed scan Raw scan, no post processing. No telling about the age. Tintypes were popular mainly from the 1860s - 1870s. Although they continued to do tintypes for little portraits much later. This tintype is almost prehistoric compared to most of the other tintypes I've seen. If you have $$, you can collect top end material for vintage photography...although these are overpriced. Early on when I first came across the Getty Museum's Open Content Collection, I saved a lot of the vintage photography I found there. Back then (the early 2010s) they offered digital JPEG files that were 45 mb+ for some of their material. And they were very nice digital copies. Nothing like the subpar 200mb TIFF files the L.O.C. offers that are just digitized low quality film copies of the item. And the Smithsonian and National Archives are no better. Sadly, the Getty Museum cut way back in their generosity. The same 45 mb JPEG may be 6mb now. I modelled my Archive after the Getty of old. Although people have to write me if they want anything super hi res. The I.A. limits uploads to 10 mb. There is a practical limit to res and file size unless you are rich. I scanned this tintype 48 bit 2400 dpi TIFF and the file was 1.8GB. Crazy! Handling paper for flatbed scanning in the Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection. Photo: D.D.Teoli Jr. I handle lots of paper in the Archive. Many hundreds of thousands of scans. When looking at scan jobs, I don't figure jobs by the number of scans, I figure them by how many feet of paper there is. A small job may be a foot or two. A big job may be 15 feet or more. Anyway, if you handle lots of paper as I do; work smart and wear exam gloves. They provide a multitude of benefits when handling paper. Wearing exam gloves gives you the following benefits: They keep finger and grease smudges off the scanner glass. They stop your skin from dropping flakes of dead skin and debris on the scanner glass. They give you a great grip on the paper both for placing and removing the paper from the scanner glass. They keep the paper clean as well as your hands clean. If not using gloves, your hands can get dirty handling matte black ink or gritty paper. White cotton gloves do keep originals clean. But they don't give you the tactile sensitivity and purchase of the paper as the exam gloves do. In the winter if your hands suffer from cracking and dry skin, the exam gloves help alleviate that problem. You can cream your hands up and put on your gloves to work. <><><><> Daniel D. Kodak (Mexico?) Inkjet Paper Deterioration See yellowing edge of paper compared to white paper. The entire sheet of Kodak paper has yellow blotchiness. The edge is the easiest way to see the yellowing in a photo. If you have a laptop or unbalanced monitor, you may not be able to see the yellowing. This was Kodak's cheapest paper at the time. From what I recall, the paper was made in Mexico. Paper shown here is 10 years old, stored under normal household conditions. It started to show yellowing about 3 to 4 years ago. All of the rest of this Kodak paper shows the same yellowing. It is hard to get a good photo or scan of the yellowing, but it is easily detected by looking at it under 5,000k lighting. A couple of other major photo paper makers also suffered from yellowing of their cheapest brand of inkjet paper. I didn't record the maker's names. I didn't purchase this paper to print on. I didn't purchase this paper to do archival testing. All these papers were purchased to use as interleaf while printing artist books with an inkjet printer. Unless interleaf was used while printing, the pages would transfer freshly printed ink to the page stacked on it. This was a big problem when using matte black ink, but not a problem with gloss black ink. RC gloss or RC semi-gloss inkjet paper worked best as interleaf as it did not accept any ink transference on the RC coated verso of the paper. <><><><> Daniel D.
