Very High Contrast Exteriors!

Hi!

A team of us will be shooting a very stylised piece in beautiful Greece in May and June of this year.

The light there is very harsh and contrasty. The two biggest lights we have are two 4k HMI's.... and we have some 12x12 fabrics as well (silks, ultrabounce etc... a very basic kit)

We would all really appreciate some advice on how we can control this light and make it a big softer on the environment and the faces. It is all set by the sea as well! I have attached a picture of one of the locations lit by the harsh sunlight!

Filters, fabrics, lenses, filmstocks, lighting techniques...any other tricks will be greatly appreciated. We are shooting on 35mm and we are doing a 2k scan afterwards in London.

Thank you for your time!

Shoot early/late and keep it as backlit as possible. Pull the processing a stop and it will lower the contrast a little.

Dont be tempted to use too heavy a diffusion on your overheads.... always looks flat and naff. 1/4 grid MAX. Less if possible.

20 x 20 or 40 x 40 (you'll need a crane probably) White nets can work well, subtle but realistic.

Hi Steven,

The first thing comes to my mind is what are you shooting ? so after that it'll be much more easier to go on. Because last week i have been shooting in a desert area in India (igatpuri) very strong sunlight all we need was hursh strong sunlight with good contrast i have done some test shots with and without diffusions, at the end i was very very pleased to have the 12 toplight witout any diffusion with 50d film...so maybe you'll need something like that for creativity.
