David McLeavy
While watching the Transformers behind the scenes featurettes, I came across this: They have a PA tapping a piece of metal, and it's producing a perfect simulation of light reflecting off of moving water. Does anyone have any idea what this material is and where to get it? Much thanks! Dave
Premium Member Frank Barrera Posted April 8, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted April 8, 2008 Mylar. And i don't think that's a PA. It would be a grip's job to manipulate the Mylar. And he's wearing a tape measure... and some 2" Black Paper tape... ummm, i think he's a grip. another great water gag is to have a shallow pool of water with the Mylar on the bottom of the pool. That looks awesome but is harder to focus than the 4'X4' frame. f
Premium Member Frank Barrera Posted April 8, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted April 8, 2008 you can get it anywhere where you get your expendables. It comes in 4' rolls like all the rest of it. f

Premium Member Frank Barrera Posted April 8, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted April 8, 2008 it's stretched (loosely) over a 4'X4' empty frame. f
Premium Member Michael Nash Posted April 8, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted April 8, 2008 Yes, it's mylar stretched on a 4x4 frame. The tighter you stretch it, the more "flat" the reflection. Stretching it more loosely and with mild wrinkles creates a more broken up reflection with more movement.
David McLeavy
Is there something I'm missing that it's $20 and up for a roll from a production supply place and $4 a roll from an arts and crafts place? Are there different grades of mylar?
Premium Member Michael Nash Posted April 8, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted April 8, 2008 No, it's not all the same stuff. "Mylar" is actually a product name like "Kleenex" used generically to describe reflective polyester film. It's available in different thicknesses, finishes, sizes, etc. http://www.grafixplastics.com/mylar_what.asp
Premium Member Chris Keth Posted April 9, 2008 Premium Member Share Posted April 9, 2008 Is the stuff from arts and crafts stores 4 foot wide rolls? That could be the difference.
