Premium Member Chris Cooke Posted September 9, 2005 Premium Member Share Posted September 9, 2005 I believe one good one is Vitorio's Storaro's ''painting with light'',From the American cinematographer magazine book store. (I haven't finish my book yet, to suggest it to you!) Dimitrios Koukas <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I believe that you meant "writing with light" by Storaro. John Alton wrote the book called "painting with light" that was published in 1949 for the first time and now put back onto print. I'm in the middle of this book and am quite enjoying it although it's not the most informative book you'll ever buy. "placing shadows" is a decent book if you want to learn the basics and then some. My personal favorite is "Reflections". I like to hear what other DP's have done to get certain looks. Subscribe to AC magazine. You'll learn tons. Also, this forum is excellent. Rik Andino
I'm just wondering if anyone can direct me To some websites or books that are good for learning the basics of lighting. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well I recommend the very first book I read about filmmaking Shot by Shot: A Practical Guide to Filmmaking (by Cantine & Lewis) http://www.pghfilmmakers.org/edu/shotbyshot.html I feel it is a great and cheap book ($15US) for beginners. It's mostly written to teach High School students about filmmaking So it's simple enough and won't bog you down... You can read it in a few days...then move on to the more complex books. Check it out, I'm sure you'll find it useful. Good Luck
Premium Member Greg Gross Posted September 10, 2005 Premium Member Share Posted September 10, 2005 Kodak has an excellent CD-Rom- "Art of Lighting For Film. I bought mine from ASC bookstore, I buy from there exclusively as I wish to support the ASC. You can buy from many sources. It gives you the basic information for lighting,dis- cusses various light sources, types of light sources. Workbook is included, sort of a self teaching mini-course in lighting. As a newbie to cinematography( I am a professional photographer) I have found the book "Reflections" to be very use- ful to me. I pick it up and I simply can't lay it down. I'm very familiar with all types of lighting/styles from professional photography, however I find that I'm always lea- rning something from "Reflections". Good luck with your search. I wish that David Mullen would do some instructional work on DVD concerning cinematography. I'm sure he would provide a very credible source of learning, source of integrity. If you get a chance try to find on forum where he talks about photographing "North Fork". He explains how he did some of the lighting set-ups and it would help you to learn about lighting. I'm sorry but I can't tell you exactly where it is on forum, however with a little searching you should be able to find it. You will actually be able to see some examples of stills from his sets.
