Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
I thought I'd be done by now with optical media stress tests. But Smartbuy BD-R and Ridata BD-R proved to be better than I thought. You never know about these things. Memorex BD-R proved to be one of the worst and you would think it would be among the best! I have to update the article, but addendum test results are here below. Here are previous BD-R stress tests. Blu-ray Discs …they are not all the same. – Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection – II (home.blog) Memorex BD-R 25GB single layer 6x. Tested twice. Both tests failed within 30 days of sun. Smartbuy BD-R 25GB 1-6X. Passed 2 months of sun and tests are ongoing. Ridata BD-R 25GB 6x. Passed 2 months of sun and tests are ongoing. None of the BD-R I've tested have been interim champs. In other words, they die within a month of sun or will last a year of sun; so it will be interesting to see what these 2 discs can actually take. If you have Memorex BD-R, I would not use them for archival work. Personally, I use the remaining stock I have for temp work only. <><><><> Reel People Film ad 1983 Selection from Daniel D. Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
Just an update... A little less than 3 months of sun and the Smartbuy BD-R 25GB 1-6X had some errors. Once a disc shows errors, I fail it. But, most of the Smartbuy disc was still fine...as far as still photo scans go. The Ridata BD-R 25GB 6x passed 3 months of sun, and sun tests are ongoing. Beside M-Disc BD-R and Japan / Taiwan Verbatim BD-R, which all lasted a year of sun; the Ridata seems to be a decent choice for cheap BD-R. Time will tell if the Ridata lasts a year of sun. I will update if it fails or after 9 months of sun tests are finished. Edited September 30, 2023 by Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
Update: 3.30.24 Ridata 25gb Blu-ray is still good after 9 months of sun. Test will conclude in 3 months. Pretty impressive performance from Ridata. It is the only Blu-ray disc to last this long other than M-Disc, Japan Verbatim and Taiwan Verbatim BD-R's. Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
The 1-year BD-R sun stress tests are done. The Ridata 25gb Blu-ray results are as follows: 2755 files on disc / 9 files failed to load. While the Ridata didn't pass perfectly, it was still pretty perfect for 1 year of sun. Here are the final results from 1 year of sun 25GB BD-R stress tests: Verbatim BD-R 25GB purchased in 2019 / Japanese manufactured - Passed Verbatim BD-R 25GB purchased in 2020-2021 / Taiwan manufactured - Passed Verbatim M-Disc BD-R 25GB purchased in 2019 / Taiwan manufactured - Passed Optical Quantum / Optodisc BD-R 25GB purchased in 2019 / Taiwan manufactured - Failed within 5 weeks of sun. Smartbuy BD-R 25GB purchased in 2019 / Taiwan manufactured - Failed within 5 weeks of sun. PlexDisc BD-R 25GB purchased in 2019 / Taiwan manufactured - Failed within 5 weeks of sun. Ridata BD-R 25GB purchased in 2023 / Taiwan manufactured - 2755 files total on disc / 9 files failed to load after 1 year of sun. Note: The Ridata inkjet printable discs have strong chemical smell when new. Whereas none of the other discs tested has this strong smell. Here is some interesting info on the history of M-Disc. Reddit (They lifetime banned me.) had a discussion on fake BD-R M-Discs. https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/yu4j1u/psa_verbatim_no_longer_sells_real_m_discs_now/ Matt_theArchivist "Hopefully this can put closure to the speculation. Our organization is a databank and is a big user of mdisc for archiving. We reached out to Verbatim last week about this Media Identification Code (MID) discrepancy. Here is their reply, in their own words ---- "The creator of the MDisc technology- Millenniata went out of business in 2017, they sold the technology to Mitsubishi, who until 2019 owned Verbatim. Due to this, the stamper ID changed, but the formula & the disc materials stayed the same. Mitsubishi sold Verbatim & all the technologies to CMC in December of 2020. Verbatim is the only company authorized to sell the original technology. Any Millenniata discs available were all produced before 2017 when the company shut down and any other brand is not the original technology." ----- So there it is, mdiscs with either the 'VERBAT' or 'MILLEN' prefix are fine. Just different production periods. Cheers." Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Small Gauge Film Archive Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Advertising Archive Daniel D.
