Rene Brar
I'm on the hunt for a good telecine house in Los Angeles for my 7222. I have 2 questions concerning this: a) Are there specific telecine systems that are better suited for b&w work as opposed to color? B) Can anyone recommend a place in or near Los Angeles? Thank you in advance for you input. -rene brar
Rene Brar
So, I assume that there are no special considerations if I'm telecineing B&W? Anyone? Thanks.
Premium Member John Pytlak RIP Posted January 30, 2006 Premium Member Share Posted January 30, 2006 Just remember that silver grains scatter light more than dyes do. So the specularity of the illumination system and sensor system in the telecine will have an effect on the perceived contrast, and on the appearance of the grain. In other words, a modern telecine with diffuse illumination like the Spirit Datacine will be different than an old Rank Cintel.
Rene Brar
John, Thank you very much for your reply, but allow me to ask for a further simplification: what qualitative difference can one expect to see between a Spirit Datacine or an old Rank Cintel? Best, Rene
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted January 30, 2006 Premium Member Share Posted January 30, 2006 Spirit transfers of 16mm tend to look less grainy than flying spot scanners like a Rank because of the diffused light source for the film. Rene Brar
I just got a pretty good quote on a C-Reality. How would you say this machines does with b&w 16mm? As well as the Spirit?

As well as the Spirit? I'm sure it will look great, just as sharp probably, only that the Spirit transfer tends to look less grainy. Now some people prefer the CRT look of the C-Reality and other Ranks compared to a CCD transfer like on a Spirit, but that's a matter of taste.
