Panavision: SuperSpeeds or Primos or S4s

Hi everybody,

 

I have a 15 day shoot in late may. The Panavision package we secured (thanks Pana) will come with the set of SuperSpeeds: 14, 17, 20, 24, 29, 35, 40, 50, 75, 100, 150 + 10:1 Cooke zoom.

 

Before I go and shoot extensive tests, I wanted to kindly ask for an advice:

 

I shot with Primos before and loved them ? very sharp. I was wondering of testing Cooke S4s as well.

 

Are SuperSpeeds inferior to Primos and S4? Are there any lenses in the above specified package that I should look out for. How will 10:1 Cooke zoom match the Zeiss primes?

If you're shooting with Panavision cameras then you cannot get Zeiss SuperSpeeds or Cooke S4 lenses. You will only have a choice of the various Panavision-mount lenses offered by the company. Most likely that means Primos, which is the lens set you listed.

Panavision's "Z" Series use remounted/rehoused Zeiss glass. I've shot many features with those lenses; they are plenty sharp for the most part except wide-open. They may flare a bit more than Primos, and they are less consistently matched as a set compared to Primos.

 

The "Z" Series lenses vary a lot more in sizes, making lens changes slower because of the different rods and donuts needed.

 

I find that the 5:1 Cooke intercuts well with the "Z" Series lenses. Again, it's not a lens that looks good shot wide-open; I prefer to use it at T/5.6 if possible.

 

I believe Panavision now has Cooke S4's for the commercial shooters (and others) that ask, but I doubt they have a lot of sets available. Their online catalog has this:

I once did a short with Panavision Uk where we shot on Cooke S4s. And the new James Bond, as has been mentioned here, which is being serviced by Panavision, is also using Cooke S4s.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll do the test and let you know how it went. Yes, Panavision odes carry Zeiss, Primos and Cookes.

 

David: the Cooke zoom I'll have is not 5:1 but 10:1. It will probably match as well.

 

I also have a rain question, that might have been placed in wrong category. Need to find a good way for a rainy day in central park...

I don't have any experience with that lens, but I would worry about an older 10X zoom with that much glass in it, just as I would avoid the old 25-250mm Ang. zoom.

Hi,

 

The Cooke 25-250 is still a good lens, and will be a good match. Best stopped down @ T5.6 It's still for sale new today in version 3. It was released after the Cooke 20-100. There is a soft spot on the early ones about 180mm from memory.

 

Its far far better than the old 25-250 Ang Zoom, I recently took one to pieces to use as a prop!

Casino Royale is shooting on Arricams. They're PanaArricams rented through Panavision London with PL lens mounts. S4's and Optimo zooms I believe.

I can't wait to tell my Arri rep that, he'll love it!

 

Phil Meheux really likes Cooke lenses. He shot 'Entrapment' which was serviced by Panavision as well, on Cooke Xtal Express lenses (on Moviecams) and I think David mentioned that for the first Zorro he had the same lenses adapted to fit Panavision cameras.
