Dan Salzmann
Anyone used these as lighting for night exteriors? I remember that they put out a fair amount of light. Any experiences, tips, tricks, opinions? I've got a film coming up where they could be useful. Need mobility and a genny is impractical.

Premium Member John Pytlak RIP Posted March 29, 2006 Premium Member Share Posted March 29, 2006 Best to run some tests. A gas mantle gives off light by an incandescent ash mantle with "rare earth" chemicals to enhance light output (radioactive thorium used to be used). I recall the color seemed to vary with the gas flow / intensity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_mantle Definitely not a black body radiator like a tungsten lamp would be. Daniel Madsen
Glad you asked this question. When camping with a coleman I asked myself the same thing. If you do any tests please share results.
Adam Wallensten
Also remember to check with the guys from the sounddepartment. We were about to use a coleman gaslantern in a scene, but it made too much noise and interferred with the dialog so we went back to a flashlight. Just a side thought. good luck
