Thibaut de Chemellier
Hi, I'm looking for opinions on this old Cooke zoom 25-250mm T4...there's many Cooke 25-250mm and it seems that the T4 is the older one ... what can I expect of such lens: Does it "breathe" a lot with focus? Is it Sharp or a bit soft? Does it extra-sensible to flares? What about colour rendition........ Thanks

There is a soft spot around 180mm otherwise O.K. Colour rendition is as you would expect from Cooke. They sell on Ebay under $1500 Stephen
Thibaut de Chemellier
Thanks Stephen, In fact I've just baught a Cooke 25-250mm MKII T3.9,with an Arriflex 35-III 2nd Generation. I thought the Camera comes with the old zoom when I posted my topic A really nice bargain BTW... The zoom is in perfect exterior condition but, inside, a lens need to be cleaned I think. The breathing is not so bad. I've seen the same lens on eBay for 3000 Euros... Does this lens has the same caracteristics as the old 25-250mm??? Thanks! Hi, I have shot with both lenses but never seen them back to back. I think there were only small changes, but I did not remember the Mk II breathing that badly! The last time I saw a Mk 1 was at IBC 2005! I was surprised by how much it breathed, and thought I would not bother buying one, evan at Ebay prices! Thibaut de Chemellier
It's when the focal lengh seems to change during focus pull. The lens zoom out when you focus to infiny...and zoom in when you focus in the other way.

Hi, Yes, mostly it is something I see with ENG video lenses. Large Film lenses usually don't breath very much but cost a fortune when new. Vario-Focal lenses fitted to cheap DV & HDV cameras breath very little. Stephen
