Preventing Wind Noise

Recommended Posts

Shooting interviews with my XL-1 in even a slight breeze both my lavalier mic and the on-camera mic pick up very unprofessional sounding wind noise. Can somebody please tell me the best way to eliminate such noise? Do I need a boom mic? A sock of some sort? Or simply to shoot only on calm days? Please advise.

Do you have a windscreen for your lav? Try to have the interview subject stand with their back to the wind, and perhaps tuck the mic down into the lapel of their shirt if possible. You can also try to block the wind with a flag or piece of foamcore.

As for the camera's shotgun or a boom, a "softie" can help dampen wind noise, but can't eliminate all noise.
