Censorship: Thoughts On The MPAA

For the record, The Mulholland Drive alterations of the nude scene(s) were done by David Lynch himself out of concern for his actress.

I can understand that but the end result is pretty silly. He should have just cut the shot entirely.

It's Reefer Madness all over again. I'll have a liberty burger with your freedom fries, Dan. And I don't want Castro...uh, I mean Tim to delete this post, so i'll just say: F*** Walmart.

I am very tired of all of the America-bashing that has been a constant din in so many posts over the last few months. I have very strong opinions about such things, but I will NOT bash you or your country simply because I may disagree with your views. I would ask that you do the same.

And I would also ask that you have some respect for our moderator who has worked very hard to create and maintain this forum.

It's amazing as to how educated we pride ourselves on being, but we bring such 4th grade maturity in dealing with complexities of sex and violence in the arts. We can't distinguish between two real adults who love each other making love, to porn which has nothing to do with real sex, real adults, or love.

Who is the "we" you are you referring to? I know when I see a scene in a film that may have graphic sex but serves the story in an artistic way. "21 Grams" comes to mind.

I also know when I see a sex scene that is put into a movie simply to sell tickets. So to say that the American public (if that is who you are talking about) cannot differentiate between the two is quite an arrogant position to take.

Where in '21 Grams' was a graphic sex scene? To me 'graphic sex scene' means that you show an actual penetration or at least some genitalia.

One thing we don't need on this board is Mccarthyism and xenophobia. If you took the time to read my posts, i've lived in the U.S off and on for over 20 years, and am proud to call it my home. How you got america-bashing from any of my posts is far beyond me. Post evidence to support my supposed anti-americanism, or keep your mouth shut. I love this country, and am a dual citizen who proudly voted for Al Gore. I care more about your country as a dual citizen than most who live there, as what, about 50% of the country doesn't vote. Up to this point, we were having a good discussion about various incarnations of censorship as opposed to good taste, but someone always has to show up with a hard-on about something or another and ruin everything.

You do not know my views, because I have never stated them. And, furthermore, how in the hell do I know yours? You have strong opinions? Take them somewhere else. You have absolutely zero proof that i've ever made any anti-american comments, and you are really starting to piss me off, man. I pay american taxes, my wife is american, my children are american citizens. So you keep your filthy mouth shut unless you know what you're talking about.

I agree with Bill that a certain degree of unconcious - or underhand- nationalism reads in many posts recently. I'm not an American but I can feel a certain self righteousness coming from certain quarters towards the US and I do think it's unwarranted.

Far be it for me to accuse anyone of intellectual elitism or showboating in the name of defending honesty and truth but I for one would be happier if a) we could be a little less intolerant of each other's percieved cultural shortcomings and b ) when challenged we could either respect the fact that the challenge probably does come from somewhere honestly felt (even if inaccurate) and not to resort to childish abuse.

And I do think that giving Tim a hard time is right off the chart. There's nothing wrong with working bad karma out of your system but there are other forums on the internet and some of them are designed for it. This one isn't.

Peace,

Dan

So, here it is, yet again. I see absolutely no nationalism or even a suggestion of a dominant culture on this board. Once again, I implore anyone to find any statements on this topic that even hint at one suggesting superiority.

Last I checked we were talking about Blockbuster. This garbage has no place on the topic I started to talk about the MPAA and other international bodies, so, please, let's stick to what's written, guys, and not go into politics, because we are not talking about politics.

And the Castro thing was a private joke between tim and myself, regarding an E-mail I sent to our good friend. Let's stuff the remarks, eh?

If this is what this board has devolved to, that we can not have a rational discussion of the topic of censorship, i'm damn sorry I got the ball rolling. I'm still waiting for bill to stop hiding under his desk and give me some evidence. I thought the Farenhiet 9/11 board was bad, but this is just rotten. It stinks to unholy hell.

I don't like people coming out to attack me because of where I was born, then running away, or, worse, talking about implied comments that don't exist. That is elitism. Funny, we were trying to prevent intellectual fascism, and here it is, right spot-on.

And, Dan, how dare you ask me to be respectful of someone making bogus attacks on my character. Let me address the whole unconscious thing right here and now: that Freudian B.S doesn't fly here. There is what exists, nothing more.
