Leicina service and repair?

Just wondering if there is anyone who specializes in repairs to the Leicina Super 8 cameras and what the spare parts situation is. I like the camera, but I'm afraid to buy into something that can't be serviced reliably. (When I have a little more time I'll post my Beaulieu repair nightmare story.)

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with your Leicina solution, I'm a little more curious about your Beaulieu nightmare. I'm looking around right now for a place to get mine serviced and returned to 24fps (currently 25fps from the previous owner). I've contacted by email Pro8mm and IJM. Any info?

Chris:

I'll PM you with the specifics. I don't really want to name names on the open forum.

My Beaulieu, a 4008ZMII I use for just for fun, kept locking up. In a nutshell, it went to two of the LA-area Beaulieu specialists and five months and over $600 in repair fees later it was still locking up. Finally sent it to Bjorn Andersson in Sweden. Bjorn opened it up and it was an absolute disaster inside: a broken part floating around jamming the gears; a broken viewfinder tube; back focus out-of-adjustment, and--get this--no sign at all that anyone had done any cleaning or lubrication.

Finding Bjorn reminds me of the time I found Arriflex tech Axel Broda. It's like finding a good, honest auto mechanic. You just want to tell everyone.

Hi;

http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Leicina_Special:_Repair

I don't know of any "official" Leicina service agents, there is a guy by the name of Sparky (I think he posts here)? who is quite a Leicina expert and has been known to take in cameras when he has time, I keep hearing that www.duallcamera.com have a very good super 8 repair service....

Good luck and please post your findings, I have a 2nd Leicina body that sounds like it needs a service that I picked up in a good deal on ebay due to spare part fear ;)

Let me guess . . . one of the LA area Beaulieu specialists so-called who did nothing to fix your camera (but charged you anyway) was Irv Higdon's IJM Incorporated.

My Beaulieu 4008 ZMII came back from Bjorn Andersson in Sweden today; a bag with all the scraps of broken and replaced parts were returned as well. It looks and sounds perfect, seem a bit quieter than before and the viewfinder is now clean.

. . .no sign at all that anyone had done any cleaning or lubrication.

Bjorn asked that I clarify the above statement I posted earlier in this thread. He says attempts at cleaning and lubrication by the two outfits I sent the camera to prior to giving it to him may have done, but if so, were done improperly.

"What I meant about cleaning/re-oiling, was that the cleaning and re-oiling was not properly made.

It?s not so easy, that only some drips of oil that has to be put here and there.

Cleaning first, then a fraction of special oil. Regards, Bjorn"

say it isn't so. i just sent irv 300 bucks. :o

Orlando,

I absolutely recommend Bjorn for any kind of Beaulieu service. He is the real deal and he did a fantastic job repairing the "repairs" made to my camera by the other two places. The only problem is that he's a little too far away! The shipping and insurance from California were almost as much as the repair itself.

After I got my ZMII back from Bjorn it worked great before developing another, unrelated problem. I didn't want to spend the cash to send it to Bjorn again, so I tried Bernie O'Doherty at Super 16 Inc. Really fast service (done right the first time) and reasonable prices (unlike some of the LA Super 8 "specialists") Here's the link: http://super16inc.com/

Here's a bit of good advice: Send your camera to Bernie! You will not be sorry, I promise you.

Good luck,

-Fran
