Fernando Nicolas
Is the aspect ratio almost the same if I'm at a 50mm focal length on an slr lens vs. super 35? Thanks.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted March 25, 2007 Premium Member Share Posted March 25, 2007 Is the aspect ratio almost the same if I'm at a 50mm focal length on an slr lens vs. super 35? Thanks. The lens doesn't determine the aspect ratio - a lens projects a circular image. The gate and later cropping determine the aspect ratio (the ratio of height to width in a rectangle). The lens determines perspective and field of view. If you're asking if a 50mm has the same field of view on a 35mm SLR versus Super-35, the answer is no -- the 35mm still camera format is 8-perf horizontal and the 35mm motion picture format is usually 4-perf vertical. So a 50mm lens behaves more wide-angle on an SLR. As far as aspect ratio, the 8-perf 35mm still format (same as VistaVision) at Full Aperture is about 1.5 : 1, whereas the 4-perf Super-35 aperture is about 1.33 : 1. Joe Sexton
I assume that you are talking about field of view, and if so a 50mm slr lens, on a super 35mm camera, would have about the same field of view as a 90mm lens on a slr camera. If you want exact conversions there is a field of view converter on panavisions web site. Edited March 25, 2007 by Joe Sexton
