if I remember correctly a very general explanation of the process (i don't have the AC issue about the film), they first desatured the image, then re-saturate skin tones and other colors. I think they also applied some kind of filter to blur the image. I remember Pope saying that since they knew what kind of DI look they were after, they try to carefully plan the shoot so they could re-create the style of early cameras. They also added some vignetting and shutter effects to mimic the hand-cranking.

 

I hope someone else can be more specific.
