Premium Member Adam Frisch FSF Posted September 12, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted September 12, 2004 Is there any particular reason they're not used in film more, other than the aperture being fixed? Has anyone tried to marry and anamorphic rear adapter (or a front fro that matter) with a mirror tele? That's be nimble little package - and I can just imagine the oval doughnuts dancing around in the background.... :P
Rob van Gelder
F-stop? most of them are f8 or higher I think. The "dougnut" shaped out of focus highlights are to many people very unnatural too. No practical iris (though I´m not sure if this is the same for all lenses). As we cannot adjust the speed (fps) to the amount of light, a variable ND or better a Pola-ND could help here, lowering the light output even more. So in general they are pretty unusable for motion picture, I think. But great for stills from wildlife and stars! Rob van Gelder

J. Lamar King IMPOSTOR
I used a Pentax 400-600mm f/8-12 Reflex zoom that had been adapted to Nikon mount on my K-3. It belonged to a photographer friend of mine, I love the donuts but it is a specialist lens. I wonder about a PL adapter or re-mounting one of those. Patrick Neary
Hey- I used a string of nikkor 500 mirror lenses when I was a stills shooter (news) and I remember none of them being very sharp, maybe it's inherent in the design.

I have a couple of still photographer friends who always preferred a Russian 500mm mirror lens - Meopta ? -Sam
