Guest Lorolar
Hi all, what do you think about the style of Russel Boyd? Any particular movies that you want to point out? How did he grow from his first features until today? How do you think his style reflects in Seale's style? Hope for an interesting discussion! Cheers! Guest fstop
Yeah, one from the Don McAlpine school of Aussie doco DPs. I think this guy has exceptional judgement when it comes to knowing the shades of every hour for every season/month and how weather affects light- he doesn't chicken out when it comes to consistency either- none of this hanging muslin cop-out for faux overcast- this guy can work out exactly what time of day you need to get the light perfect from x angle- Certainly unrivaled in that category nowadays. Seale definitely shares a bit of Boyd's theorectical approach as far as getting everthing shot as quickly as possible and prioritising story and actors go. I really admire that in a DP personally, and I think that's one thing the Aussie's have always been good at.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted September 29, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted September 29, 2004 I love Boyd's work in "Gallipoli" probably most of all, along with "Year of Living Dangerously" -- naturalistic, low-light work in anamorphic. Dramatic use of shadows, silhouettes, not afraid of contrast or darkness.
