Shooting HD F23 with a final aspect of 2.35 from a 16:9 frame

Hi, I am going to shoot with the F23 camera, using the Cinestyle zoom and Digiprimes for a final release on cinema theaters. We would like to have a final projection aspect that emulates a 2.35 look. There are some advices around this subject?

 

We are going to shoot everything with the S-log setting all the time and some shutter and ramping alterations on the native HD Cam frame aspect.

We know that we are going to use just a part of the entire 16:9 original frame, but please let us know your comments around this. Any help will be appreciated.

Some additional info, we cannot shoot with Anamorphic adapters and lenses because the costs versus our budget, besides in our country we do not have them. The idea is to make de upconversion to 35 but looking for the 2.35 aspect on final release.

 

Here we have some ideas about how to shoot on HDCAM 1.78 keeping all the info inside safe zone for 2.35, but any additional advises, could be great

Framing 16x9 HD for cropping to 2.39 for recording out to 35mm anamorphic is quite common. Most of those Sony HD cameras like the F900 have a scope frameline generator for the viewfinder called "VISTA 2" (go to the Marker Menu in an F900 -- don't know about the F23.)

Sony did away with the "VISTA" settings in the F23, and instead have a user-scalable box. Apparently there were too may requests for variances on 2.35:1 and 1.85:1.

 

Go to USER/OPERATION/MARKER SETTING/VARAIBLE>VAR V: 816 to crop the box to 2.35:1, or line up a framing chart and scale the box however you like.

Well then, if you want to be really picky, it would be 1920 x 803 for a 2.39 : 1 image, which is what anamorphic projection is these days. But 2.35 : 1 is close enough, 2.37 : 1 is close enough, etc.

Exactly. The "816" value actually came from Jeff Cree at Band Pro, which of course works out to 2.352 something... Sony apparently had requests for 2.32; 2.35, 2.37, 2.39; and so on.

 

I'm one of those guys who likes to play it safe by shooting 16x9 with the 90% margin, just to protect for all subsequent displays. Personally for 2.35:1 (or whatever number you chose) I might even tuck the side margins in a little from the full 1920 for composing, but that's just me.
