Given that in both cases, all the camera is doing is reading the codec off the tape, and putting it through an output, there shouldn't be much difference.

So long as the outputs are of comparable construction quality, there shouldn't really be any difference, as neither camera can improve on the original recording quality.

Exactly. Additionally some consumer miniDV's are controllable by the NLE over the firewire connection. One example is my Sony DCR-TRV30 which is fully remote controlled over firewire by my Avid DV Pro system as if the TRV30 was a miniDV deck. I could even do an assemble edit back out to the camera in the unlikely case that I wanted to go that route.
