Scope framing

2.35 : 1 hasn't been the official scope projection ratio since the early 1970's. SMPTE/ANSI changed the height of the projection aperture, reducing it slightly to hide flashes at frameline splices better, creating a 2.39 : 1 aspect ratio. We call it 2.35 out of habit, or round it up to 2.40 (Panavision often refers to scope as 2.40.)

All 35mm scope prints have a standard 2X squeeze; the final aspect ratio after unsqueezing is determined by the projection aperture plate. So whether you compose for 2.35 or 2.39, which it gets shown depends on the projection aperture (some old theaters still have 2.35 anamorphic masks instead of 2.39). Also note that the WIDTH is often trimmed anyway by the black curtains on the sides of the screen, creating shapes anywhere from 2.00 to 2.39, but often in the 2.20 range.

Anyway, to be accurate, frameline markings for Super-35 for cropping to scope should be 2.39 : 1.
