Drop Ceiling Scissor Clamp

Recommended Posts

I usually don't hang anything larger than a 750Watt Mickey or a 2'*4 kinoflo on the scissor clamps. Always safety the light with trickline.

For larger lights, remove the panels and find a solid beam in the ceiling. Use a Maffer or Cardellini on the solid beam to rig heavier lights.

That's about the same weights as I am comfortable with. I have done a baby before but I made sure it was at a point directly under where the drop ceiling was tied off to the wire that holds it up. For kinos, you can usually just remove some panels and lay it on top of the structure. If you do it that way, still make sure to safety it.

Remember, it's not just the clamp but what the clamp is attached to, i.e. some flimsy aluminum strips held up by wire.

If in doubt, don't "hang" the light from the clamp, hang the weight of the light from something more substantial and just use the clamp as a mounting point for aiming the light.

That said, small units like Tweenies are usually pretty safe. Give the mounting point a test "tug" to see what flexes or gives before hanging anything from it.
