Premiere Vs. FCP

Recommended Posts

I just switched over to Mac from pc. I've always cut my show reel on Premiere but now I'm going to use FCP6. Can I convert avi files from Premiere and keep the same quality file for editing on FCP? If so, which is the best format for DVD and online use.

Thanks.

Yes.

If it's a DV file you can just import it into FCP and then re-export it out as a .mov. It'll stay DV quality (or whatever codec you're working with assuming it's installed in FCP) and just change "wrappers." Some slight degredation will happen, but it should be marginal.

If you're going to DVD you want to use Compressor and it's DVD settings in there which is Dolby 2.0 and M2V, both of which can be tweaked. For online, I like h.264 for iphone and ipod, 640x480 which is what I have in the "download" version of my reel online. Also there is .flv, but for that you need the flash video encoder as part of adobe CS3+
