F Bulgarelli
Hello, I need a flashlight with a strong beam that would read in smoke. Can't afford a xenon flashlight, is there any affordable alternatives? Thanks
Aaron Moorhead
A good high-end Mag-lite reads in haze well -- smoke, not quite so much. To eye, it reads great in smoke, but it's really illusory, and you don't get exactly the same effect on film.
Ross Neugeboren
CREE LED flashlights can put out a lot of lumens, max around 200. EagleTac, Surefire, and Inova are all US based manufacturers of those flashlights.
Dan Salzmann
You can also trick out a large flashlight with a 12 volt halogen bulb run the power cable up the actors sleeve to a slab battery concealed on the actor. Did this on a few films with 50 watt bulbs and it was really effective. Just remember that those halogens get hot so be careful and turn it off between takes.
