jeff striker
hey, im submitting a storyboard to Cal Arts in order to get into a summer film program. I've made storyboards before but I would like this to look as professional as possible, so if anyone could let me know a few things about a proper storyboard format and perhaps provide a template, it would be greatly appreciated. ! thanks
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted December 5, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted December 5, 2004 I've made up my own storyboard forms for years. I don't think there are really industry standards. Basically you have the box in the proper aspect ratio and under that (usually) is a scene/shot number or just a shot number followed by a description. You can see some of my storyboards here: http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...?showtopic=2733

Premium Member Greg Gross Posted December 5, 2004 Premium Member Share Posted December 5, 2004 (edited) I really like David Mullen's storyboards and I wish I could draw that well. I use stick figures for people and draw in objects such as tables, chairs, practicals. I have never heard of any standard way of making a storyboard. I break my script down into three acts with so many scenes in each act and produce the story board from those scenes. This past sept. and oct. I was on location for my first job as a DP(dv production, 2 canon XL1s's,DP-170) the storyboards were done by a senior in highschool who the director knew and used to draw his storyboards. They were excellent and she was going on to be an art major. One of the problems I had on this shoot was lack of confidence on the the part of my cameramen. I had to find a way to lead them and inspire them, as they were intimidated by me being a professional photogragher. I can't go in to great detail here but the copies of the storyboards that I had helped them achieve more than they thought they could, the storyboards were part of my plan to help them achieve, part of my leadership. With local dv productions I shoot(my own productions) my grilfriend soimetimes draws the storyboards for me and she can draw quite well. While I was away on location one morning I had four hours free time and shot my own personal dv on a beach of a chinese man performing martial arts. The beach, sea, surf, sky, clouds, seagulls flying right at the camera. All of these things in the background and foreground and of course no storyboard, as no time for one. Shot and basically edited in the camera. Greg Edited December 5, 2004 by pd170user
