Simon Bjork
I see this all the time, but it feels like it's not good for the lights. What is your opinion, can I just turn on or off a lamp with unplugging the cable, or do I have to turn the on/off button? Is there a difference between HMI, Tungsten, Kino-Flos etc? Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted April 27, 2009 Premium Member Share Posted April 27, 2009 Not a good idea on any Ballasted light (Kino/HMI) and also not a good idea on tungsten either. You can do it, yes, but only when you cannot at all get to the switch. Lights have a switch for a reason, especially the big ones.
Premium Member Hal Smith Posted April 27, 2009 Premium Member Share Posted April 27, 2009 The arc created slowly eats away both the plug and the receptacle. I've seen dimmer packs that have receptacles with intermittant contact because people had been hot plugging them for years. I've also replaced quite a few plugs over the years that were running hot and had gone bad because of both hot plugging and resulting poor contact made by all the pitting on the plug's mating surfaces.
