I was wondering how hard it would be coming out of film school and trying to get a job that will pay enough to keep me afloat. Right now I am thinking about working towards being a DP. Also, if nobody kills me for asking two different questions on the same thread, is there a typical "ladder" you need to climb up towards being a DP?

Anymore I would say you become a DP when you become a DP. Many people have come to the job many different ways. As for how to stay afloat doing it... it's often a profession of attrition and you need to survive until the point where the quality of your craft gets you the quality of rate on the quantity of jobs you need.

Many shooters, myself included, have had or still have a second job to help make ends meet.
